[June 01, 2013]  The St. John United Church of Christ Book Club donated copies of the 2013 Newbery Medal and Honor Books to the District 27 library media centers.

The John Newbery Medal is given each year for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. This year's winner, "The One and Only Ivan," by Katherine Applegate, is a sensitive story about a captive gorilla and his friendship with an orphaned elephant.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal is given to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The 2013 winner, "This Is Not My Hat," by Jon Klassen, is a clever tale about a fish seeking his stolen hat and has unique illustrations combining digital media and Chinese ink drawings.
