The "Constellation" sculpture came to be through the ideas of Kathy Vinyard of the city of Lincoln.

After the city purchased the strip of land along South Sangamon to create better parking options in that block, the leftover grassy spot took on a park-like setting with green space, trees and benches. Vinyard began looking for someone to do a nice piece of art that could be seen from the train station and by passengers on the Amtrak.

Hoffman was just the man for the job. He volunteered to design a piece of original art for the city, and the city gratefully accepted.
