Fiat: Supplier delays will force shutdowns

[June 13, 2013]  MILAN (AP) -- Italian carmaker Fiat says it will temporarily stop production at some European car plants in the coming days due to insufficient deliveries of plastic parts.

Fiat said in a statement Wednesday that more than 5,500 vehicles can't be completed due to missing components from the Italian supplier Selmat, creating an ''unmanageable" backlog.

The plant shutdown also will affect Fiat Industrial, maker of heavy equipment.

Fiat was still evaluating which plants would be shut down and for how long. Last week, there were production delays at plants in Serbia, Poland, Italy and Spain due to the lack of parts.

Selmat's website says it makes parts for all Fiat car brands as well as Iveco trucks. Selmat makes air vents and interior components.
