[March 09, 2013]  McLEAN -- Sugar Grove Nature Center will host a workshop March 22 on establishing a purple martin colony. The time is 10 a.m. to noon.

Purple martins are iridescent, dark purple birds that perform aerial acrobatics as they catch insects in flight. In our area, they nest almost exclusively in man-made houses, in large colonies. Ron LeGrand, a successful purple martin landlord for over 20 years, has fledged thousands of martins from his colony in Mattoon.

Workshop participants will learn the natural history of this interesting bird, techniques to attract and maintain a colony at your site, including house selection and placement, and the ultimate detail -- monitoring your colony once they have arrived.

The workshop fee is $5 for members of the nature center and $8 for nonmembers. Registration is required and forms are available at www.sugargrovenaturecenter.org/registernow.pdf. For more information, call 309-874-2174 or email register@sugargrovenaturecenter.org.
