New breastfeeding support group at ALMH

[March 12, 2013]  The benefits of breastfeeding extend well beyond basic nutrition. Besides giving babies all the vitamins and nutrients they need for the first six months of life, breast milk is packed with disease-fighting substances that protect babies from illness.

However, even though breastfeeding may be "natural," that doesn't mean it comes so naturally. On March 27, Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital is beginning a free, weekly breastfeeding support group to provide mother-to-mother encouragement to breastfeeding moms. The mothers and babies will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. each Wednesday in Steinfort B at ALMH.

"Breastfeeding moms can be faced with challenges. Whether they are concerned about the baby getting enough to eat or learning how to juggle breastfeeding and going back to work, we couldn't be more pleased to provide a support system to breastfeeding moms," said Elizabeth Meyrick, R.N., manager of the obstetrics unit at the hospital.

"We have lactation consultants available at ALMH, and we are also available by phone once the new mothers and babies return home," Meyrick said. "However, peer support is very important to developing a positive breastfeeding experience."

The meetings will be led by Renea Coberly, R.N., who is a certified lactation consultant and works in obstetrics at the hospital.

At each meeting, the babies will be weighed to track their growth, and the group will be able to ask questions and discuss their current issues.
