In the first game against Maranatha (2-0), senior pitcher Justin
Walen (Shelbyville, Shelbyville High) received the start, as he held
Maranatha to only four hits throughout the game and only one earned
run. However, LCU (4-6) was able to muster only three total hits on
the game, with their only run coming in the bottom of the sixth
inning. Maranatha did all of their offensive damage in the second
inning, scoring all three of their runs, including one run off a
passed ball. For Maranatha, it was senior pitcher Derek Funkhouser
(Paris, Ill.) who received the win, holding LCU to the single run
while pitching all seven innings.
In the second game, LCU jumped out to grab an early lead with two
runs in the bottom of the first inning. Maranatha was able to
quickly respond, though, and rattled off four runs of their own in
the top of the second inning. Maranatha then grabbed two more runs
in the top of the seventh inning and closed out the game to grab the
win.
For the second game in a row, LCU was held to only three hits in
the entire game, compared with Maranatha's six total hits. LCU
sophomore pitcher Micah Wolfe (Mattoon, University of Northwestern
Ohio) received the start, giving up only two earned runs throughout
the game.
Afterward LCU head coach Chris Headrick said: "These are a tough
set of games to lose. Our pitchers pitched great games, and we have
to do a better job of giving them good defense in the field as well
as giving them run support in the colder conditions."

For LCU, one bright spot at the plate for the doubleheader was
sophomore Scott Reynolds (Champaign, Unity High) as he went 2-3 in
the second game, with both of his hits being singles.
For Maranatha, junior Tim Shelp (Independence, Mo., Tri-City
Christian) went 4-7 from the plate. Shelp also pitched the second
game and went all seven innings while giving up only one earned run.
LCU will return to action Friday as they travel down to Memphis,
Tenn., to take on Victory University (19-8) for a four-game series.
