[March 21, 2013]  HARTSBURG -- The Hartsburg-Emden 8-1A volleyball squad (20-7) took home state championship honors Tuesday night, defeating Oakland Lake Crest (19-3) in the title match at Hartem.

Game one was a thrilling battle tied 21-all before the Stags pulled it out with a four-point run to win 25-21. Game two started out just as tight before the Stags started pulling away in the middle of the set. The Stags won game two 25-13.

"The whole night was just incredible," said Hartem coach Jennifer Hayes. "The bleachers were packed full of orange and black. The junior high students were all painted up. The gym was electric. There's just nothing quite like Hartem volleyball at its finest!"

The Stags end the year with a 20-7 record.

For Hayes, this was her 20th junior high coaching season and 20th junior high state title, with 12 in 7A and eight in 8A. She called it a "perfect ending to a perfect season."
