[March 25, 2013]  RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Daimler Trucks North America says it won't have to lay off 1,300 factory workers in North Carolina and Oregon as it warned in January and instead will cut about 600 jobs.

Portland, Ore.-based Daimler Trucks says its Portland factory that builds Western Star trucks has cut its workforce by about 230 employees.

About 340 jobs will be lost at a Cleveland, N.C., factory that builds Freightliner long-distance trucks. Losses of 715 jobs were expected there originally.

Daimler Trucks says a Mount Holly plant that builds smaller Freightliner delivery trucks and a Gastonia parts plant won't lose any jobs. The company in January had projected 500 cuts there.

The company says the layoffs are due to a cutback in truck demand but that incoming orders allowed for jobs to be spared.
