State's Senior Health Insurance Program moves to Department on Aging

SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois Department on Aging Director John K. Holton, Ph.D., announced this week that the Senior Health Insurance Program is now administered by his department. The program known at SHIP is a free statewide health insurance counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. SHIP was previously under the Department of Insurance, but the governor signed Executive Order 13-1, which transfers SHIP to the Department on Aging, effective April 1.  (Click here for the rest of the story.)


Bill requiring review of suspicious deaths of vulnerable adults passes out of committee

Measure would require review of suspicious at-home deaths of elderly, disabled adults

Attorney General Madigan alleges financial adviser deceived Springfield-area seniors

Area Agency on Aging to present Lunch and Learn at Oasis for family caregivers

The Area Agency on Aging for Lincolnland, in cooperation with Senior Citizens of Logan County, has scheduled a Lunch and Learn program March 19 for informal caregivers of older adults and grandparents and other relatives raising children. Steve Iden, senior attorney with the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, will present information regarding "Do I Need a Will and/or a Trust." The program will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oasis Senior Center, 501 Pulaski St. in Lincoln.  (Click here for the rest of the story.)


State moves to cap long-term care insurance premium rate

HB 2333 reforms will protect seniors from skyrocketing annual rates

CHICAGO -- Illinois Department of Insurance Director Andrew Boron announced on Wednesday an effort by the department to protect long-term care policyholders. The Department of Insurance, with help from state Rep. Robyn Gabel, 18th District, Evanston, has proposed House Bill 2333, which calls for a 15 percent annual cap on the premium rate for a policyholder's long-term care insurance.   (Click here for the rest of the story.)


Social Security: Electronic payments become mandatory March 1

SPRINGFIELD -- Beginning March 1, with few exceptions, all federal benefits, including Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits, are to be paid electronically. That's according to a rule from the U.S. Department of the Treasury.  (Click here for the rest of the story.)
