When it came time for the actual walk to begin, Nancy Ireland called the group to order inside the Laughlin Center. Ireland introduced all the teams that were walking this year and drew special attention to two of them.

She announced that Nona's Nitwits and Wendy's Walkers would lead off this year's walk in honor of the women for whom their teams were named.

Nona Perry of Lincoln died in July of 2012 at Maple Ridge Care Centre. She was 74 years old and had MS. Wendy Strocher, of Decatur, lost her life at the age of 49 in September of  last year. Strocher was a Lincoln native, with her mother living here still.

In their memory, both Nona's and Wendy's families requested donations be made to multiple sclerosis programs and research.
