[May 14, 2013]  The Lincoln Park District has been notified that it will receive a $400,000 Illinois Department of Natural Resources Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant.

The grant will assist the park district in the construction of a new Family Aquatic Center to replace the existing 47-year-old pool. The swimming pool was closed after the 2011 season.

The grant award will fund approximately 14 percent of the planned project costs, the rest of which will be funded through the park district's capital improvement fund. Local funds are also being solicited to help with the project.

The aquatic center will be located in the same footprint as the old pool on the park district's 38-acre multiuse complex at 1400 Primm Road. The aquatic center will include three vessels of water: a zero-depth entrance toddler pool with several water features; a plunge pool for the water slides; and a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool. A new mechanical building, shade structures and a green area are also included.

The park district is excited about moving forward with the project and adding the Family Aquatic Center to the 22,000-square-foot multi-sports and fitness center, six baseball and softball fields, driving range, skatepark, playgrounds, and administrative and activity center at the Primm Road location.

The aquatic facility is expected to open in the summer of 2014.
