[November 13, 2013]  SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Clinic is joining monuments and well-known buildings around the world by recognizing World Diabetes Day 2013 in a very special way. Nov. 13-15, Springfield Clinic facilities -- the main campus, Wabash and SC 1st -- will be illuminated with blue lighting to commemorate World Diabetes Day.

Nov. 14, World Diabetes Day, is celebrated in more than 160 countries worldwide to bring awareness and provide education about diabetes. The blue lighting is symbolic to remind the community of the importance of diabetes prevention. For several years, buildings and monuments worldwide have been lighting up with the color blue for diabetes awareness, and this year Springfield Clinic will join the list.

Diabetes affects 25.8 million people of all ages in the U.S., comprising 8.3 percent of the population. Of those, more than 7.0 million are undiagnosed. In addition, 35 percent of adults over age 20 and 50 percent of adults 65 and older have pre-diabetes. Complications of diabetes include kidney failure, hypertension, adult blindness, heart disease, stroke and amputations, and diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death.
