[November 19, 2013]  CHICAGO (AP) — A purported member of the Latin King street gang in suburban Chicago has been convicted of attempted murder for shooting a rival gang member four years ago.

Jesse Alvarez faces a maximum life prison sentence. A Kane County judge convicted him Monday of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and armed violence.

The 23-year-old Aurora man went to the home of an alleged Maniac Latin Disciple, asked him his gang affiliation and then opened fire with a .45-caliber handgun. The Kane County state's attorney's office says Alvarez fired five shots, hitting his target twice in the leg.

Alvarez had waived his right to a jury trial, leaving it up to Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles to decide the case. Sentencing is set for Feb. 26.
