After Mallory Sinner of the health department offered a welcoming speech, Mayor Keith Snyder also spoke a few words.

The mayor told the group that when the young people came to the city council, that got the attention of the aldermen and really helped to cinch the decision to grant the request.

Included in the small but happy group of spectators for the event were Angie Stoltzenburg from the Healthy Communities Partnership, Mark Hilliard and Shana Altman of the Logan County Department of Public Health, and Marty Ahrends of Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

At the end of the ceremony, three little ones in attendance were happy to stand beside the new sign for a picture or two. Among the many benefits of offering a smoke-free park is that it will be a safer and healthier environment for children.

Signs will be placed at all city-owned parks. This does not now include Latham or Scully parks, as they are owned and maintained by the county.
