[October 02, 2013]  The Abraham Lincoln Tourism Bureau of Logan County launched a new trail Saturday morning. The Abraham Lincoln Geocaching Trail was introduced in the historic Memorial Park, west of Lincoln.

Both individuals and families showed up for the launch of this new history-teaching trail, demonstrating the intended audience diversity for the new activity.

A member of Central Illinois Geocache Association, Tom Hankins, explained geocaching basics for anyone who might not be experienced. Hankins described the process of looking for a cache, using a GPS device or a smartphone. He provided some clues as to where and how most caches are commonly hidden. He also explained what trails are like and what one might expect to find in a cache box.

Most caches give the finder an opportunity to sign in to leave their imprint, to take something and to leave something for future finders.

Tom Hankins showed those present who would soon be hitting the trail one of the boxes that are used on this trail.

Tourism bureau interim director Leslie Hoefle welcomed the visitors to Logan County on the weather-perfect morning that promised a great day for geocaching.

Nancy Saul, from the tourism office, explained how this geocache program introduces explorers to President Abraham Lincoln and his history here in Logan County. Those finding the caches on this trail will not only learn more about Abraham Lincoln as surveyor, friend, lawyer and politician but can also acquire a full set of souvenir postcards.

The tourism office has a GPS unit available to borrow for those who might not have one to follow this trail.
