[August 31, 2013]  DELAVAN -- "Thank a Farmer" is this year's theme for the Delavan Fall Festival. Ending at 6 p.m. Monday, there remain three full days packed with activities, entertainment and food that make the Delavan Fall Festival one of the best events in the area.

The fall festival is a time when friends, family and visitors come together; summer is closed out, and fall welcomed. Many of those who have moved away make the festival their annual homecoming.

The event has been going on for so many years, it is part of the fabric for the small farm town, where generation after generation grow up knowing relatives and friends of relatives. The festival carries forward history for anyone who has lived there.

With so much to do, the festival offers something for everyone. Most of the activity centers around the pavilion area of Lake Park, just northeast of downtown.

Friday night is primarily youth night. The pavilion area of the park offers carnival rides and entertainment, as well as music and dancing. Crowds of teens were quickly filling the area and the energy was ramping up as the sun went down.

Farther up the road in the park, at the quiet amphitheater, young parents behind strollers with little ones tucked inside, and maybe another child walking, began rolling in. Blankets were spread on the lawn in preparation for dusk and a family movie -- sweet times to remember for years to come.

On Saturday, the food stand begins offering the popular seasoned, grilled pork chop sandwich. While the chops are the favorite sandwich at the festival, there also will be plenty of brats, hot dogs and other festival food, as well as special dinners of chicken on Saturday and walleye on Sunday, cooked up in the park.

The festival is all organized and worked by volunteers.
