'Prisoners' tops box office with $20.8M

[September 24, 2013]  NEW YORK (AP) --  The Hugh Jackman kidnapping drama "Prisoners" opened with a box-office-leading $20.8 million, a good start to Hollywood's fall season.

Final box office results were released Monday. Despite a lengthy running time and a dark story line, Warner Bros.' "Prisoners" found a large audience for adult-oriented material.

Also in new release, the dance film "Battle of the Year," which stars R&B singer Chris Brown and was slammed by critics, opened poorly with $4.6 million.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Monday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com, are:
