New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka said he experienced no pain after playing catch Monday for the first time since he partially tore an elbow ligament in early July.

"Good," Tanaka said in English, bypassing his translator, upon the initial question asking how he felt.

Tanaka had a platelet-rich plasma injection three weeks ago.

The 25-year-old was examined by three doctors, who agreed that the tear was small enough to avoid Tommy John surgery.

Tanaka, who is out for the season, went 12-3 with a 2.51 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in 18 starts over 129 1/3 innings.

---The Yankees placed right-handed pitcher David Phelps on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. Phelps was removed from Sunday's start against the Boston Red Sox after just two innings amid discomfort in his elbow.

The Yankees recalled right-handed reliever Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Phelps' roster spot.

---The Chicago Cubs plan to call up prospect Javier Baez on Tuesday at the Colorado Rockies.

Baez, one of the top minor league shortstops, recently moved over to second base. Baez was the No. 9 overall pick by the Cubs in the 2011 draft.

---San Francisco Giants right-hander Matt Cain will miss the rest of the season due to elbow surgery.

Cain will have surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow next Monday. He will need three months to recover, but he is expected to be ready for spring training.

The 29-year-old Cain went on the disabled list July 21, retroactive to July 11, because of recurring inflammation that likely contributed to his 2-7 record with a 4.18 ERA in 15 starts this season.

---The Washington Nationals recalled outfielder Steven Souza Jr. from Triple-A Syracuse and placed outfielder Nate McLouth on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

McLouth's move is retroactive to Aug. 2. McLouth, 32, is 24-for-139 (.179) in 79 games (33 starts) this season.

---The Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-hander Maikel Cleto from Triple-A Charlotte and added him to the bullpen.

Right fielder Avisail Garcia has just a bruised triceps muscle in his left arm after being hit with a pitch Sunday in the third game of his rehab stint with Charlotte.

---Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Bourn could go out on a minor league rehab sometime this week. Bourn has been on the disabled list since July 6 with a strained left hamstring.
