Tigers 4, Yankees 3 (12 innings)

Alex Avila hit the game-tying single in the seventh and then hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the 12th inning as the Detroit Tigers outlasted the New York Yankees.

It was Avila's eighth home run and first since July 12 at Kansas City.

After David Price allowed three runs and eight hits over 8-2/3 innings in his Detroit debut, Joba Chamberlain, Joakim Soria and Joe Nathan combined on 3-1/3 scoreless innings.

Cardinals 3, Red Sox 2

Center fielder Jon Jay looped a two-out RBI single to left-center in the bottom of the eighth to snap a tie and give the Cardinals a win over the Boston Red Sox.

Lance Lynn tossed seven innings in a no-decision for the Cardinals (60-51) who stayed one game behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.

Brewers 4, Giants 3

Carlos Gomez drove in three runs and Gerardo Parra hit his first home run as a Brewer in Milwaukee's victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Brewers' center fielder Gomez hit a two-run homer in the third inning, then drove in a third run in the fifth inning with a bunt single.

Orioles 9, Blue Jays 3

The Baltimore Orioles clubbed three home runs to power past the Toronto Blue Jays.

Catcher Caleb Joseph and second baseman Jonathan Schoop hit back-to-back shots in the fourth, while first baseman Chris Davis added a solo blast in the fifth to help the Orioles (64-48) extend their American League East division lead over the Blue Jays (60-54) to five games.

Rangers 16, White Sox 0

The Texas Rangers hit a season-high five home runs and cruised to a 16-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Catcher Robinson Chirinos hit two home runs in a game for the first time while third baseman Adrian Beltre, designated hitter J.P. Arencibia and left fielder Choo Shin-Soo also hit homers.

Texas starter Colby Lewis tossed a complete-game and struck out seven.

Marlins 6, Pirates 3

The Miami Marlins scored five runs in the eighth inning to rally for a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The inning consisted of only one extra-base, a double by Miami left fielder Christian Yelich that drove in the final run, along with three walks, two singles and an error.

Mets 6, Nationals 1

Daniel Murphy had three hits and two RBIs while Zack Wheeler pitched into the seventh inning as the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals.

Mets' second baseman Murphy tripled and scored in the first inning then added a two-run single in the seventh.

Reds 9, Indians 2

Johnny Cueto pitched his fourth complete game of the season while Ramon Santiago and Jay Bruce homered to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a win over the Cleveland Indians.

Cueto (13-6) gave up two runs on five hits to end the Indians' four-game winning streak.

Twins 3, Padres 1

Twins first baseman Kennys Vargas hit his first major league home run, a three-run blast in the sixth inning, to give Minnesota a win over the San Diego Padres.

Just 48 hours after posting 16 runs in a 16-3 rout of the Chicago White Sox, the Twins struggled to get any offense going against Padres right-hander Jesse Hahn, who held Minnesota to two hits through five superb innings.

A's 3, Rays 0

Right-hander Jason Hammel pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and earned his first victory with the Oakland A's against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Hammel went 0-4 with a 9.53 ERA in his first four starts for the A's after being traded to Oakland by the Chicago Cubs on July 5.

With the win, the Athletics took a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West.

Dodgers 5, Angels 4

Third baseman Juan Uribe scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Dodgers used the victory to extend their lead over the second-place San Francisco Giants in the National League West to 2 1/2 games.

Uribe singled in the ninth, moved to third base when A.J. Ellis lined a single and scored on a throwing error from Los Angeles third baseman David Freese.

Cubs 6, Rockies 5 (12 innings)

Javier Baez homered off Boone Logan to give the Cubs a win after Chicago had taken the lead in the 11th only to see the Rockies tie the game.

Carlos Villaneuva, who pitched the 12th, earned his second save.

He gave up a one-out single to catcher Wilin Rosario but struck out pinch hitter Michael McKenry and got second baseman DJ LeMahieu to ground into a force play to end the four-hour, 21-minute marathon.

Mariners 4, Braves 2

Felix Hernandez allowed just four hits and one run over eight innings to lead the Mariners to a win over Atlanta.

Hernandez (12-3) turned in his major league-record 15th consecutive start of seven or more innings and allowing two runs or fewer.

The Mariners improved to 58-54 while the Braves (58-55) lost their seventh straight.

Royals 12, Diamondbacks 2

Nori Aoki hit a grand slam, and Salvador Perez and Billy Butler added three-run homers as the Kansas City Royals overpowered the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Perez opened the scoring with his homer in the third inning to give left-hander Danny Duffy (6-10) some unaccustomed support. Duffy won for the first time since June 30, although he gave up only nine runs in his previous five starts.

Phillies 2, Astros 1 (15 innings)

Ryan Howard, who homered earlier in the game, singled home the decisive run in the bottom of the 15th inning, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies over the Houston Astros.

Howard's game-winning hit came off Jake Buchanan, the last of six Houston pitchers as the Astros ended a string of three straight wins. (Compiled by Jahmal Corner; Editing by John O'Brien)
