[August 13, 2014]  Aug 12 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games.

Marlins 3, Cardinals 0

Jarred Cosart pitched seven scoreless innings, and second baseman Donovan Solano slugged a two-run homer to lead the Miami Marlins to a 3-0 win over the St Louis Cardinals.

The Marlins (59-60) will go for a three-game sweep of the series on Wednesday while St Louis (62-56) will be hoping to end a run of four losses in five games.

Cosart allowed just three hits, all singles, and one walk while striking out three.

The loss went to Cards ace Adam Wainwright (14-7), who allowed three runs in seven innings.

Cubs 3, Brewers 0

Kyle Hendricks worked 7 1/3 scoreless innings for his second career shutout victory as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0.

Hendricks (4-1) allowed six hits, walked one and struck out five.

Cubs center fielder Arismendy Alcantara went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored while first baseman Anthony Rizzo blasted his 26th home run of the season.

Dodgers 4, Braves 2

The Los Angeles Dodgers ousted the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series a year ago and are 5-0 against them this season after a 4-2 victory.

Right-hander Dan Haren (10-9) turned in his second consecutive strong start, and left fielder Carl Crawford continued his recent hot hitting, going 3-for-5 with a double and a walk.

Haren, a 12-year veteran, gave up six hits and two runs over six innings, striking out seven and walking one.

Pirates 4, Tigers 2

Right-hander Edinson Volquez hurled six solid innings to reach double figures in victories as he pitched the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the reeling Detroit Tigers.

Volquez (10-7) allowed two runs and five hits with five strikeouts and two walks to win his second start in a row and for the fourth time in his last five starts at PNC Park.

The Pirates (64-55) won for the fifth time in their last seven games and lead the National League wild card standings while the Tigers (63-54) lost their fourth straight game.

Red Sox 3, Reds 2

Yoenis Cespedes hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the eighth inning, lifting the Boston Red Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Koji Uehara earned his 26th save for the Red Sox (53-65), who defeated the Reds for the eighth time in nine regular-season meetings.

Catcher Devin Mesoraco went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Cincinnati.

Nationals 7, Mets 1

The Nationals tied a season high by hitting four home runs and Doug Fister tossed seven shutout innings as Washington beat the New York Mets 7-1 at Citi Field.

The Nationals (64-53) increased their National League East lead over second-place Atlanta to a season-high five games.

Left fielder Bryce Harper's two-run homer in the second provided the Nationals the only offense they would need but they added five runs in the sixth on a leadoff homer by Anthony Rendon and two-run shots by Ian Desmond and Michael Taylor.

A's 11, Royals 3

Josh Donaldson homered twice and drove in four runs, and Brandon Moss matched his career high with four hits as the Oakland Athletics pounded out an 11-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals, ending their eight-game winning run.

The A's bashed a season-high 20 hits, with seven players contributing multi-hit games.

Donaldson, who upped his homer total to 25, belted out Bruce Chen pitches in the seventh and eighth innings.

Astros 10, Twins 4

Chris Carter belted two home runs to spark a power surge and pace the Houston Astros to a 10-4 win over the Minnesota Twins.

The Astros (50-70) bashed three home runs in support of right-hander Collin McHugh, who limited the Twins (53-65) to one run on four hits with three strikeouts over six innings.

Astros center fielder Jake Marisnick hit his first homer of the season, and second baseman Jose Altuve went 3-for-5 for his 51st multi-hit game.

Padres 4, Rockies 1

Right-handed starter Odrisamer Despaigne restricted the Rockies to five hits over seven innings as the Padres defeated Colorado 4-1.

The Padres made history, starting seven Latin American players in a game for the first time in franchise history.

Five had a hand in the Padres' first two runs with Yonder Alonso and Rymer Liriano scoring on RBI outs by Abraham Almonte and Alexi Amarista with a pair of singles by Yasmani Grandal moving the runs into scoring position.

Mariners 6, Blue Jays 3

Home runs by Kyle Seager and Kendrys Morales led the Seattle Mariners to another big lead before the bullpen held on for a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Seager and Morales both hit solo home runs as the Mariners pulled out to a 5-1 lead through six innings, but the Blue Jays made things interesting late.

Rangers 3, Rays 2 (14 innings)

Adam Rosales' bases-loaded walk in the 14th inning gave the Texas Rangers a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Texas (47-72) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win for the just the 12th time in the past 49 games.

Angels 7, Phillies 2

The Los Angeles Angels scored seven runs in the sixth inning and it was all they needed in a 7-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Right fielder Kole Calhoun got the inning started with a home run, and he also drove in the seventh run of the inning with an RBI single.

White Sox 3, Giants 2 (10 innings)

Second baseman Gordon Beckham singled home Moises Sierra with two outs in the top of the 10th inning, rallying the Chicago White Sox past the San Francisco Giants 3-2.

After blowing a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth, the White Sox regrouped against right-hander Santiago Casilla (1-2), the Giants' fourth pitcher. (Compiled by Ben Everill; Editing by John O'Brien)
