[August 18, 2014]  Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia expressed some frustration over struggling outfielder Josh Hamilton, despite beating the Texas Rangers on Saturday night.

Hamilton, 33, starred for the Rangers before signing a free-agent contract with the Angels prior to the 2013 season and his play has slipped since then.

This season, Hamilton is batting .266 with just eight home runs, including .216 in the second half. He has batted .189 in 53 at-bats this month. He did miss some time earlier this season with a thumb injury.

"Josh is not the same that we saw when we were looking at the other dugout," Scioscia said. "He's not in the batter's box with the confidence we know he has. He's not attacking the ball like he can. He's working hard to try to find it ... but we need him to do what he's capable of doing, or close to that."

Hamilton was 2-for-9 with seven strikeouts the first two games of this series against his former team.

---The New York Yankees activated catcher Brian McCann from the seven-day concussion list before Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays and optioned catcher Austin Romine to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

McCann was injured Aug. 8 against the Cleveland Indians. He left that game after feeling the effects of a third-inning foul ball off his mask.

---San Diego Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso is out for the season with a right forearm strain, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Alonso, 27, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday. He may require surgery.

---The Cleveland Indians recalled right-handed pitcher Danny Salazar from Triple-A Columbus and optioned outfielder Tyler Holt to Columbus.

---The Philadelphia Phillies announced they acquired second baseman Jesmuel Valentin as one of two players to be named later when they dealt right-hander Roberto Hernandez to the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this month.

The 20-year-old son of former major-leaguer Jose Valentin was hitting .282 with seven home runs and 24 steals in Class A.

---The St. Louis Cardinals recalled right-hander Carlos Martinez from Triple-A Memphis and optioned left-hander Kevin Siegrist to Memphis.

Martinez is 2-4 with a 4.74 ERA in 38 appearances for the Cardinals this year. Siegrist took the loss Saturday night and is 1-3 with a 6.11 ERA.

---The Boston Red Sox recalled right-hander Steven Wright from Triple-A Pawtucket and designated outfielder Corey Brown for assignment. Wright worked four innings (one run) Sunday.

---The Detroit Tigers purchased the contract of right-hander Jim Johnson after their 4-2 victory on Saturday night and optioned rookie right-hander Melvin Mercedes to Triple-A Toledo.

Johnson, who saved 101 games for Baltimore the past two seasons, was released by Oakland on Aug. 1 after he posted a 7.14 ERA. He gave up two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings with Toledo.

---Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Chris Owings (shoulder strain) will step up his rehab program on Friday when he reports to Triple-A Reno.

---New York Mets third baseman David Wright (left shoulder) did not play Sunday. Wright was hit in the left shoulder by a pitch Saturday night.

Right-hander Jacob deGrom (right rotator cuff tendinitis) felt fine after throwing a bullpen session and remains on track to return from the disabled list next Saturday, the first day he is eligible.
