[August 29, 2014]  LINCOLN - A newly restructured organization to more effectively serve local residents and businesses by combining tourism, downtown redevelopment and business growth efforts is expected to be fully functioning by early November 2014.

The Unified Organizations Committee (UOC) is seeking applicants for the competency-based board which will lead the new ‘yet-to-be-named’ organization. The board will focus on a vibrant vision for Logan County to address the community’s needs with bold, results-oriented action.

The new organization will consolidate three existing organizations: Main Street Lincoln, Logan County Tourism Bureau and the Lincoln Logan Chamber of Commerce. Although the organization will be under the umbrella of the Chamber of Commerce, the newly elected board will replace each entity’s current board of directors.

Applicants for the new board will be interviewed by the five-member Nominating Committee. The top candidates will be submitted for a vote in late October.

The UOC has structured the first year’s voter composition to ensure the voice of the community is heard and is inclusive in nature. Forty-eight votes will be available to following entities:

  • 16 votes will be divided between the local cities and villages (1 vote for each city/village in the county (except the City of Lincoln) and 1 vote for the Logan County Board, representing the unincorporated areas of the county.

  • The remaining 32 votes will be distributed among the contributing UOC members:

    • 15 votes - Lincoln Logan Chamber of Commerce
    • 9 votes - Logan County Tourism Bureau
    • 5 votes - City of Lincoln
    • 3 votes - Main Street Lincoln

The election will take place on Oct. 29 and will be administered by a neutral third-party institution (to be named at a later date). Board members will be elected based on knowledge, skill and the ability to govern. The board will be comprised of community residents and business owners who represent the following interests and competencies:

  • Financial Aptitude
  • Business Acumen / Small Business Owner knowledge
  • Business Attraction, Development & Retention
  • Agricultural Interests
  • Tourism / Hospitality Industry
  • Promotion / Advertising
  • Education (K-12, Higher Ed, Adult Ed)
  • Civic Experience
  • Government Relations
  • Technology

The deadline for submitting applications is Sept. 19. The new board will take office in November, starting with a two-day strategic planning session on Nov. 6 and 7.

As part of the planning process, the UOC identified the following vision for the new group to pursue:

  • A clear, common brand for the community (clear identity, well-articulated, creates pride, esteem and unity)
  • A healthy economy (job opportunities and an employable workforce)
  • Leveraging and promoting our assets (events, destinations, new museum, convenient location, using our facilities to host – ‘heads in beds’)
  • Vibrant downtowns (more boutique retail, more businesses, better atmosphere, streetscapes – support for new and existing businesses)
  • Improved government relationships (cities/county) - having county success
  • Colleges here thriving and growing
  • Mentorship programs between college/businesses
  • Education systems are collaborating and leveraging each other’s resources – have a consistent plan (school, activities, vocation)
  • More medium-income and accessible housing available
  • Technology – more competition between providers
  • Double local citizen engagement
