[December 02, 2014]  MOUNT PULASKI -  Junior Lilly Pickett scored 10 points in the Lady Toppers home opener Monday night. Mount Pulaski lost to Waverly 58-39.

The Lady Toppers were off to a bit of a slow start at home Monday night. Junior BreAnna Rentmeister finally got the ladies on the board with a jumper in the lane with 2:26 remaining in the first quarter. Waverly had opened the game by going on a 17-0 run on the Lady Toppers. Lilly Pickett was able to enter the scoring column with a put back on the offensive rebound and the foul. She would sink the free throw to make the score 19-5 in favor of Waverly. Lizzie Ford hit a two-pointer just before the first quarter ended as the Lady Toppers were down 22-7.

The Lady Toppers played better in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Scotties 13-12 in fact. Pickett scored seven points in this quarter, including a nice spin around jumper for two points. Alec Hayes had four points in the quarter, two on a baseline shot that was nothing but net. Caroline Huff also banked in two points after a nice pass from Hailey Moore. This rounded out the ladies second quarter scoring and cut the Waverly lead to 34-20 at the half.

Waverly would come out firing in the third quarter and take advantage of several Mount Pulaski turnovers and hence go on a 12-0 run. At the 3:28 mark Rentmeister would sink a free throw and the Lady Toppers were down 46-21. Rentmeister would go on to have two more free throws and a basket in the quarter for all of the Lady Toppers third quarter scoring. At the end of three Waverly had doubled up the scoring over Mount Pulaski 50-25.

Hayes got a hot hand in the fourth quarter for the Lady Toppers, scoring nine points, but unfortunately that was not enough. Huff scored two points in the quarter while freshman Emily Wakeman played inside and was able to score three points in the losing effort.
