RHP Jeff Samardzija was acquired by the White Sox from the A's
along with RHP Michael Ynoa in exchange for RHP Chris Bassitt, C
Josh Phegley, INF Marcus Semien and 1B Rangel Ravelo.
Samardzija, 29, returns to his native Chicagoland area --- he was
born in Merrillville, Ind., was a star wide receiver at Notre Dame
and spent seven seasons with the Cubs --- to pitch for the team he
rooted for while growing up. Despite a stellar 2.99 ERA in a
combined 33 starts last season with the Athletics and Cubs, his
record was just 7-13. "He is very excited," White Sox GM Rick Hahn
said Dec. 9 at baseball's winter meetings at the Manchester Grand
Hyatt.

RHP Michael Ynoa was acquired by the White Sox from the A's along
with RHP Jeff Samardzija in exchange for RHP Chris Bassitt, C Josh

Ynoa, 23, went 4-2 with a 5.52 ERA in 31 relief appearances for
Class A Stockton in 2014.

Bassitt, 25, made his major league debut with the White Sox last

MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Butera, Drew
C Drew Butera became the answer to a trivia question when he was
dealt from the Dodgers to the Angels on Dec. 9 in exchange for cash
or a player to be named. According to ESPN, it was the first trade
between the Los Angeles-area teams since 1976, when C Ellie
Rodriguez went from the Angels to the Dodgers in exchange for OF
Orlando Alvarez. Butera, 31, was designated for assignment by the
Dodgers on Dec. 5. He hit .188/.267/.288 with three homers and 14
RBIs this year. Butera is a career .183 major league hitter.

MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Spruill, Zeke
RHP Zeke Spruill was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks
on Dec. 9, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for newly signed OF
Yosmany Tomas. Spruill, 25, went 1-1 with a 3.56 ERA in six games
(one start) for Arizona this year. He finished 3-7 with one save and
a 6.04 ERA in 28 games (11 starts) for Triple-A Reno.

MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Liriano, Francisco
LHP Francisco Liriano and the Pirates agreed to a three-year, $39
million contract, according to reports Dec. 9. Liriano turned down
the team's one-year, $15.1 million qualifying offer in November. The
31-year-old veteran started 55 games the past two seasons and has a
23-18 record with a 3.20 ERA and 338 strikeouts in 323 innings for
the Pirates. In nine major league seasons with the Pirates, White
Sox and Twins, Liriano has a 76-72 record with one save and a 4.08
ERA.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Montero, Miguel
C Miguel Montero was acquired by the Cubs from the Diamondbacks in
exchange for minor league RHPs Jeferson Mejia and Zack Godley on
Dec. 9. "He really gives us a solid presence at the catcher
position," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "It's a great first step
toward building this into a winner."
Montero, 31, hit .243 with 14 home runs last season in 136 games. He
had spent his entire nine-year career with the Diamondbacks. He is
under contract for the next three seasons for a total of $40
million, and the Cubs will pick up nearly the full amount.

RHP Jeferson Mejia and RHP Zack Godley were acquired by the
Diamondbacks from the Cubs in exchange for C Miguel Montero on Dec.
9. Mejia, 20, finished 2-4 with a 2.48 ERA in 12 games, including
two starts, with rookie-level Mesa in 2014.

RHP Zack Godley and RHP Jeferson Mejia were acquired by the
Diamondbacks from the Cubs in exchange for C Miguel Montero on Dec.
9. Godley, 24, went a combined 4-3 with 15 saves and a 3.09 ERA in
40 relief appearances last season with the Cubs' two full-season
Class A farm clubs at Daytona and Kane County.

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics De Leon, Jorge
RHP Jorge De Leon, who made a combined 19 appearances for the Astros
the past two seasons, was designated for assignment by the A's on
Dec. 9. He was claimed off waivers by Oakland from Houston on Oct.
9.
De Leon, 27, had no decisions and a 4.91 ERA in eight major league
games this year. He finished 4-5 with five saves and a 3.01 ERA in a
total of 46 appearances in Double-A and Triple-A this season.
Overall in the majors, De Leon is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 17 1/3
innings.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Lester, Jon
LHP Jon Lester and the Cubs agreed to a six-year, $155 million deal,
multiple media outlets reported Dec. 9. The contract reportedly
includes a vesting seventh-year option for an additional $15
million.
Lester's average annual salary of $25.8 million ranks second among
major league pitchers behind the $30.7 million average of Los
Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, according to USA Today.
Lester, 30, posted a 6-4 record with a 2.35 ERA last season for the
Athletics after he was acquired from the Red Sox in exchange for
outfielder Yoenis Cespedes at the trade deadline. Between the Red
Sox and A's, he went 16-11 with a career-best 2.46 ERA.
