12/24/2014 MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Barnes, Scott

LHP Scott Barnes joined his fourth team in a month on Dec. 23 when he was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays from the Rangers. Texas acquired him off waivers from Baltimore on Dec. 8. He was traded from Cleveland to Baltimore on Nov. 26 in a cash transaction. Barnes, 27, went 3-2 with a 3.69 in 31 1/3 innings over 25 games (one start) for Triple-A Columbus last season. He appeared in a combined 22 games for Cleveland in 2012 and 2013, going 0-1 with one save and a 5.20 ERA.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Ross, David

C David Ross finalized a two-year, $5 million deal with the Cubs on Dec. 23. Ross, 37, is reunited with his former Boston batterymate, LHP Jon Lester, who also signed with the Cubs in December. Ross has a .233 career average with six teams over 13 seasons. He batted .184/.260/.368 with seven homers and 15 RBIs in 50 games for the Red Sox last season. With the arrival of Ross to back up Miguel Montero, the Cubs are expected to trade Welington Castillo.

MLB Note - Minnesota Twins Stauffer, Tim

RHP Tim Stauffer, a 32-year-old veteran with experience as a starter and reliever, signed a one-year, $2.2 million deal with the Twins on Dec. 23. He was the long man in the San Diego bullpen the past two seasons, but he will receive a chance to make the Minnesota rotation in spring training. He went 6-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 44 games (three starts) for the Twins last season. Stauffer has a 32-34 career record with a 3.87 ERA in 183 games (73 starts) over nine seasons with San Diego.

MLB Note - Minnesota Twins Fryer, Eric

C Eric Fryer was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester on Dec. 23, clearing a spot on the Twins' 40-man roster for newly signed RHP Tim Stauffer. Fryer, 29, hit .213/.272/.307 with one homer and five RBIs in 28 games for Minnesota last season. He batted .252/.323/.333 with no homers and 11 RBIs in 36 games for Rochester.

MLB Note - Minnesota Twins Parmelee, Chris

1B Chris Parmelee, designated for assignment by the Twins on Dec. 13, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester on Dec. 23. Parmelee, 26, hit .256/.307/.384 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 87 games for Minnesota last season.

MLB Note - St. Louis Cardinals Walden, Jordan

RHP Jordan Walden and the Braves avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year, $6.6 million deal on Dec. 23. The deal includes a team option for 2017. Walden, who came to the Cardinals in the November deal with the Atlanta Braves for RF Jason Heyward, made $1.49 million in 2014. In five major league seasons, Walden has a 3.10 ERA in 212 innings. As a setup man for the Braves last season, he pitched in 58 games and had an 0-2 record with three saves, 20 holds and a 2.88 ERA with 27 walks and 62 strikeouts. The 27-year-old posted 32 saves for the Angels in 2011. Walden has 38 career saves and 50 holds.

MLB Note - Miami Marlins Claiborne, Preston

RHP Preston Claiborne was claimed off waivers by the Marlins from the Yankees on Dec. 23. The 26-year-old posted a 3-0 record with a 3.00 ERA in 18 games last season for New York. In parts of two seasons with the Yankees, Claiborne has pitched in 62 games and has a 3-2 record with four holds and a 3.80 ERA.

MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Grilli, Jason

RHP Jason Grilli and the Braves agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal on Dec. 23. The contract includes a club option for 2017. Grilli's best season was 2013, when he was the Pirates' closer. He had a 2.70 ERA with 33 saves that season. However, he lost the closer job to Mark Melancon early last season, and was later traded to the Angels for Ernesto Frieri. Grilli, 38, finished 2014 with a 4.00 ERA with 12 saves for the Angels and Pirates combined.

MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Lavarnway, Ryan

C Ryan Lavarnway joined his fourth team in less than three weeks when he was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles on Dec. 23. Lavarnway, who went 0-for-10 in nine games for Boston this year, had his offseason of turmoil begin when he was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Nov. 25.

The Dodgers claimed Lavarnway off waivers on Dec. 5. Lavarnway was soon designated for assignment again, and the Cubs claimed him off waivers on Dec. 19. Days later, the Cubs reached agreement with C David Ross, Lavarnway's former teammate in Boston, on a two-year free agent deal. Ross' arrival in Chicago led to Lavarnway hitting the waiver wire again, and the Orioles picked up Lavarnway.

In parts of four seasons with the Red Sox, he hit .201/.249/.315 with five homers and 34 RBIs in 97 games.

MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Berry, Quintin

OF Quintin Berry was released by the Orioles on Dec. 23, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired C Ryan Lavarnway. Berry, 30, went 0-for-2 with one stolen base in 10 games for Baltimore last season. He hit .285/.382/.367 with three homers, 35 RBIs and 25 steals in 112 games for Triple-A Norfolk.

MLB Note - San Francisco Giants Peavy, Jake

RHP Jake Peavy and the Giants finalized a two-year, $24 million free agent deal on Dec. 23. Peavy, 33, was acquired in a July trade with the Red Sox, and he was a key contributor for San Francisco down the stretch. In 12 starts for the Giants, he went 6-4 with a 2.17 ERA. In the postseason, Peavy went 1-2 with a 6.19 ERA in four starts, losing twice in the World Series.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Kickham, Mike

LHP Mike Kickham was claimed off waivers by the Cubs from the Giants on Dec. 23. Kickham, 26, made two September relief appearances for San Francisco last season, allowing five runs in two innings. In 27 starts for Triple-A Fresno, he went 8-8 with a 4.43 ERA. He gave up 171 hits in 148 1/3 innings with 64 walks, the fifth most in the Pacific Coast League, and a career-high 131 strikeouts. Kickham made his major league debut in 2013 and went 0-3 with a 10.16 ERA in 12 games (three starts) for the Giants that year.

MLB Note - Cleveland Indians Maronde, Nick

LHP Nick Maronde, designated for assignment by the Indians on Dec. 16, was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus a week later. Maronde, 25, had no decisions and a 12.79 ERA in 11 relief appearances for Cleveland this year. He finished 0-2 with one save and a 7.24 ERA in 24 minor league games (six starts) for six teams in 2014.

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Rodriguez, Fernando

RHP Fernando Rodriguez, designated for assignment by the A's on Dec. 18, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Nashville on Dec. 23. Rodriguez and the A's had avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $635,000 deal on Dec. 2. Rodriguez, 30, went 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in seven relief appearances for Oakland last season. He finished 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA in 38 relief appearances for Triple-A Sacramento.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Jensen, Kyle

OF Kyle Jensen, designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Dec. 19, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Dec. 23. Jensen, 26, was acquired by Los Angeles from Miami in November for a player to be named. He hit .260/.331/.481 with 27 homers and 92 RBIs in 133 games for Triple-A New Orleans last season.

MLB Note - Milwaukee Brewers Peterson, Shane

1B/OF Shane Peterson was claimed off waivers by the Brewers from the Cubs on Dec. 23. Four days earlier, Chicago acquired Peterson off waivers from the A's. Peterson, 26, hit .308/.381/.460 with 11 homers and 90 RBIs in 137 games for Triple-A Sacramento last season.

MLB Note - Houston Astros Downs, Darin

LHP Darin Downs was outrighted to Triple-A Fresno on Dec. 23, clearing a spot on the Astros' 40-man roster. Downs, 29, went 2-1 with a 5.45 ERA in 45 relief appearances for Houston last season. Over three major league seasons, the first two with Detroit, Downs has a 4-4 record with a 4.76 ERA in 92 relief outings.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Gomes, Brandon

RHP Brandon Gomes, designated for assignment by the Rays on Dec. 19, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Durham on Dec. 23. Gomes, 30, went 2-2 with a 3.71 ERA in 29 relief appearances for Tampa Bay last season. In 27 games for Durham, he finished 0-2 with a 3.62 ERA.
