The book featured single-page, first-person stories about several men and women involved in the civil rights movement, including those well-known, such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, the Little Rock Nine and Malcolm X, as well as several lesser-known activists.

Mrs. Workman said her students write a new book each year. In their research they cover the well-known activists, but they also strive to come up with new people to include in their book so each year the volume is unique. She added that the project is one that her students get very involved in, and they take great pleasure in putting together a well-written reference book that can be used into the future.
