[February 21, 2014]  BARTONVILLE — Chester-East Lincoln finished their season in style with a 39-36 overtime win over Brussels in the third-place game of the 2014 IESA eighth-grade Class 1A state tournament.

The Panthers finish their season with 22 wins and two losses.

The game was close throughout as Chester-East held a 7-4 lead after one period, only to see the Eagles claw back into the lead at halftime 17-14. The Panthers outscored Brussels 11-6 in the third stanza to lead 25-23 heading into the fourth period.

Brussels led 32-29 and Reese Kiel had a one-and-bonus for the Eagles with about 30 seconds remaining. Kiel missed the front end and the Panthers grabbed the rebound.

Chester-East called a timeout with about 12 seconds remaining. Isaiah Bowers took the inbounds pass after the timeout and swished a 21-footer to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Brussels jumped out to a 36-32 lead in OT behind two baskets from Andrew Hoemmen. From that point on it was all Chester-East, and in particular, all Jordan Jacobs.

[to top of second column]

Jacobs scored all seven of his team's points in the overtime on two 2-point field goals and one huge 3-point goal that gave the Panthers the lead for good in OT at 37-36.

Scoring for CEL:

  • Isaiah Bowers: 15 points

  • Jordan Jacobs: 9 points

  • Sam Birnbaum: 8 points

  • Josh Vinson: 5 points
