Slow Food Film Festival scheduled for Jan. 25

[January 17, 2014]  SPRINGFIELD A film festival focusing on the nation's food industry and how we can create a healthier, cleaner and more sustainable world is planned for Jan. 25 at the Benedictine University Library, 1500 N. Fifth St. in Springfield.

Slow Food Springfield, the University of Illinois Extension and the Green Club at Benedictine University are partnering to present the fifth annual Slow Food Springfield Film Festival.

"These films tell the stories behind our food and can increase awareness and interest in our food system," said Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant, who is chairing the festival and is a local food systems and small farms educator with University of Illinois Extension.

"This is such a great opportunity for our students," said Dr. Julia Leischner, adviser for Benedictine's Green Club. "We are pleased to be a part of creating awareness of sustainability and the numerous environmental, economic and health benefits from supporting local food producers."

The festival will feature five films from 2 to 8:30 p.m. in the Presidents' Room auditorium and adjoining classroom in the Benedictine Library. For previously posted film titles and descriptions, click here.

"We're pleased to announce that this year refreshments and dinner will be provided by 5flavors Catering for purchase during the festival," says Ann Hamilton, chapter leader for Slow Food Springfield.

Admission is $7 per person, $5 for Slow Food Springfield members and free for students with a student ID.
