[July 10, 2014]  July 9 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's Major League Baseball games.

Tigers 4, Dodgers 1

Max Scherzer held the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run in seven innings, outdueling Zack Greinke in a matchup of All-Star pitchers and leading the Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 victory.

Scherzer (11-3) allowed just four hits and struck out seven.

Center fielder Austin Jackson had two extra-base hits and scored twice to pace the American League Central Division leading Tigers (50-37) offense.

Shortstop Miguel Rojas hit his first major league home run for the Dodgers (51-42) and Greinke (11-5) gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out eight.

Rockies 6, Padres 3

The Colorado Rockies matched their season high with five home runs in a 6-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Reliever Joaquin Benoit yielded two homers and three runs in the eighth as the Rockies broke a 3-3 tie.

Center fielder Drew Stubbs hit a two-run shot, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who along with Blackmon homered in the first inning, followed Stubbs with his 20th homer of the season.

Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario also homered.

Diamondbacks 4, Marlins 3 (10 innings)

Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt doubled in two runs to cap a three-run 10th inning against Miami closer Steve Cishek to give the Diamondbacks a 4-3 victory over the Marlins.

Miami took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 10th when second baseman Donovan Solano drove in two runs with a double.

Second baseman Didi Gregorius had two hits for the Diamondbacks.

Angels 8, Blue Jays 7

Albert Pujols' two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to an 8-7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Trailing 7-6 in the seventh, Pujols belted a pitch from Blue Jays left-hander Aaron Loup deep to center field.

Toronto center fielder Colby Lewis got his glove on the ball, but it caromed over the fence for the 512th homer of Pujols' career, tying him with Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews for 21st on the all-time list.

Mets 4, Braves 1

Right-hander Dillon Gee threw seven impressive innings in his first start in almost two months and catcher Travis d'Arnaud capped a three-run seventh inning with a long two-run homer as the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1.

Gee, who had not pitched since May 10 due to a back strain, allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out four.

Nationals 6, Orioles 2

Catcher Wilson Ramos, shortstop Ian Desmond and right fielder Jayson Werth each hit solo home runs as the Washington Nationals scored a 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Werth and first baseman Adam LaRoche both finished with two RBIs.

The victory gave the Nationals (49-40) a one-game lead over the Braves in the National League East while Baltimore (49-41) retained a 2-1/2-game lead in the American League East.

Reds 4, Cubs 1

Alfredo Simon took over the National League lead in victories with a six solid innings and center fielder Billy Hamilton's run-scoring triple ignited a three-run rally in the fifth to lift the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Simon (12-3) allowed one run on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts over 6-2/3 innings and a season-high 119 pitches.

Red Sox 5, White Sox 4

The Boston Red Sox rallied late to pull out a 5-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Boston scored three runs in the eighth inning before pinch hitter Daniel Nava doubled home the tying run and scored on right fielder Brock Holt's single in the ninth.

Phillies 4, Brewers 1

Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins homered and Roberto Hernandez threw eight effective innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1.

Hernandez (4-8) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three.

Royals 5, Rays 4

Salvador Perez's three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning gave the Kansas City Royals a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Perez, the American League's starting catcher in next week's All-Star Game, hit an arcing shot against reliever Kirby Yates that just cleared the wall.

Rookie right fielder Kevin Kiermaier hit a fourth-inning grand slam and went 4-for-4 for the Rays.

Yankees 5, Indians 4 (14 innings)

Jacoby Ellsbury's home run with two outs in the top of the 14th inning lifted the New York Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Neither team scored after the fifth inning until center fielder Ellsbury homered off right-hander Vinnie Pestano (0-1) in the 14th.

Cleveland led 3-0 early but New York rallied with the help of two Mark Teixeira home runs.

Astros 8, Rangers 4

Carlos Corporan knocked in the go-ahead runs with a two-run double in the sixth inning and Robbie Grossman had a career-high four hits as the Houston Astros completed a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers with a 8-4 victory.

Corporan was 2-for-4 and Grossman went 4-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Center fielder George Springer went 2-for-4, including his second home run in as many days, a two-run shot that gave the Astros a four-run cushion.

Texas All-Star right-hander Yu Darvish (8-5) suffered the loss, giving up season highs of six earned runs and 10 hits.

Cardinals 5, Pirates 2

Second baseman Kolten Wong homered for the third time in four games as the Cardinals dumped Pittsburgh 5-2.

Lance Lynn (10-6) scattered six hits, walking two and striking out four, as he reached 10 wins before the All-Star break for the third straight year.

Left fielder Matt Holliday reached base four times for St Louis, scoring twice and knocking in a run.

Giants 5, A's 2

Right-hander Matt Cain won for the first time since May 15, and right fielder Hunter Pence drove in two runs with a home run and a single, propelling the San Francisco Giants to a 5-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

San Francisco moved back into a tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the National League West.

Cain gave up a solo home run to A's first baseman Stephen Vogt in the fourth inning but held the powerful Oakland lineup to just one other run in six effective innings. He struck out four.

Twins 8, Mariners 1

The Minnesota Twins' dormant offense came alive in a big way, erupting for nine hits in an 8-1 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Designated hitter Kendrys Morales drove in three runs, while Minnesota first baseman Chris Colabello added a pair on a two-run double in the second inning. (Compiled by Ben Everill)
