NHL roundup: Wild, Fontaine settle on two-year deal

 The Minnesota Wild avoided an arbitration hearing with Justin Fontaine and signed the forward to a two-year contract on Tuesday.

Fontaine's agent, Neil Sheehy, said the deal was worth $2 million.

The 26-year-old Fontaine had 13 goals and eight assists for 21 points and a plus-6 rating in 66 regular-season games as a rookie in 2013-14. He added two points in nine playoff games. Fontaine tied for the fourth on the team in goals and tied for 12th among NHL rookies. His 11 regular-season goals were the third highest and his plus-minus rating the second highest by a Wild rookie in team history.

---Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal injured a core muscle during offseason workouts and recently underwent surgery, the team announced Tuesday.

Staal is expected to be recovered in time for the start of the 2014-15 season. The procedure was done by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia.

The 29-year-old Staal finished last season with 21 goals and 61 points in 79 games. His points total was his lowest in a full season since his rookie year, but he still led the team in points and assists. Staal has 289 goals and 399 assists for 688 points in 769 career games.
 


---The Winnipeg Jets reached agreement on a one-year, $3.3 million contract with forward Michael Frolik on Tuesday and avoided an arbitration hearing.

Frolik had 15 goals and 42 points in 81 games last season.

A former first-round pick by the Florida Panthers in 2006, the 26-year-old also played for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Jets. In 430 career games with the three teams, he has 76 goals nad 193 points.

---The Florida Panthers signed forward Jimmy Hayes to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Hayes, 24, has scored 31 points with 17 goals in 96 career NHL games. He was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov. 14 and went on to score 11 goals with seven assists in 53 games with the Panthers.

---Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier will join the the Buffalo Sabres as an assistant on coach Ted Nolan's staff, according to a Buffalo News report on Tuesday.

Trottier has been out of coaching since 2002 when he was ousted as the head coach of the New York Rangers during the season. He previously served as an assistant coach for the Pitsburgh Penguins and the Colorado Avalanche.

Trottier's career as a player ended in 1994 and included 1,425 points in 1,279 NHL games covering 18 seasons with the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins. As a player and as an assistant, Trottier has been a part of six Stanley Cup teams. Among those were the four straight titles won by the Islanders in the 1980s.

Nolan was looking to fill openings after firing two assistants on former coach Ron Rolston's Sabres staff last season and reassigning two others.

---The Columbus Blue Jackets signed forward Jerry D'Amigo to a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

D'Amigo, 23, was acquired from Toronto on July 21 after scoring one goal and two assists in 22 games for the Maple Leafs last season He had 29 points and a plus-7 rating in 70 games with the AHL's Toronto Marlies before making his NHL debut on Dec. 5.
