[June 27, 2014]  Reds 3, Giants 1: Brandon Phillips homered and Mike Leake had a career-high 12 strikeouts over eight innings as visiting Cincinnati edged San Francisco in the opener of a four-game series.

Leake (6-6) allowed one run on four hits for his third straight win and Aroldis Chapman worked around Buster Posey’s leadoff double in the ninth for his 15th save. Jay Bruce went 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Reds, who have won 11 of their last 15 games to move a season-high two games over .500.

The Giants lost for the 12th time in their last 16 games despite Adam Duvall’s first major league hit, a leadoff homer in the seventh. Cincinnati broke a scoreless tie in the fifth on Zack Cozart’s two-out RBI double off Ryan Vogelsong (5-4), who yielded one run while striking out seven over six frames.

Phillips put the Reds ahead 2-0 with a leadoff homer in the seventh off Jean Machi, who saw his scoreless streak come to an end after 25 1/3 innings. Phillips returned after missing three consecutive games with a bruised right heel and had two hits in four at-bats.

Cincinnati added an insurance run as Bruce followed Phillips’ blast with a ground-rule double and scored on Ryan Ludwick's single up the middle past a diving Brandon Crawford. Posey went 2-for-3 for the Giants, who struck out 13 times.
