Zion Lutheran student wins medal at state chess tournament

[March 10, 2014]  NORMAL — The chess team from Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln capped off a fine season by participating in the Illinois Elementary School Association state tournament Feb. 28-March 1 on the campus of Illinois State University.

Nathan Ford was the team's top finisher and won a bronze medal for second runner-up in the eighth-grade division. He had a 5-2 record.

Zion participants in the state chess tournament were Elijah Burton, Evan Derrick, Will Messner, J.R. Lynn, Nathan Ford, Lance Podbelsek, Ethan Goodey and Michael Newhouse.

Coaches of the ZLS chess team are Lloyd Mason and Dave Comstock.
