Martinez, J.D.

OF J.D. Martinez was released by the Astros on March 22 to help clear roster space at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

In explaining the move, GM Jeff Luhnow told CBS Sports that Martinez was a "victim of our own success." The comment came across as strange since the Astros have lost at least 106 games in each of the last three seasons. However, Luhnow was referring to the team's strong farm system and abundance of young outfielders.

Martinez, 26, has a batting line of .251/.300/.387 with 24 home runs and 126 RBIs in 889 at-bats over three seasons with Houston. He batted .250 with seven homers and 36 RBIs in 296 at-bats last year.

Schumaker said he does not need surgery and the shoulder was popped back in. He was batting .441 this spring.

Detroit Tigers: Scherzer, Max

RHP Max Scherzer and the Tigers ended talks on a contract extension, and discussions won't resume during the season. The announcement by the team essentially guarantees Scherzer will become a free agent at season's end. GM Dave Dombrowski spoke with reporters March 23, saying that the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner was given a "substantial offer." Once that offer was declined, the two sides agreed to end talks for the spring.
