NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - Two young boys whose mother was found stabbed to death in an apartment complex in Lodi have been recovered in South Carolina, where their father had been arrested, New Jersey police said on Saturday.

State police had said on Friday they were searching for the boys after John Jordan, 47, abducted Nicholas Jordan, 8, and Anthony Jordan, 7, from the Wilson Elementary School in Lodi, in northern New Jersey.

"Suspect John Jordan was recently stopped and taken into custody near a relative's home in South Carolina. His two boys have been recovered safely," according to an advisory saying the so-called Amber Alert issued for missing children was canceled.

New Jersey State Police announced Jordan's capture in a Tweet at midnight EDT on Friday/Saturday.

"#AmberAlert canceled. Children recovered safe in SC, father in custody. Great job to all partner agencies."

Police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Jordan was going through a divorce with his wife, police said.
