[May 28, 2014]  SPRINGFIELD - On a beautiful Sunday afternoon of the Memorial Day weekend, Bryan Smith won the Springfield Mile riding a newly-built Villa-Esparza/Crosley Radio Kawasaki besting two unrestricted Harley-Davidson XR750s. Smith led most of the race and was the first to pass the checkered flag followed by Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. and Jared Mees who finished second and third respectively.

The race was red-flagged four times with only 5 laps remaining in the 25 mile race. Steve Bonsey went down twice and then on the third restart, Mickey Martin took a spill. The fourth restart was the result of a malfunction in starting equipment. In the end it was Smith barely holding off Coolbeth and Mees at the line. Former national #1 Jake Johnson was a close fourth riding a Ducati 1100. Current national #1 Brad Baker, who is still recovering from a badly broken arm, rounded out the top five in his debut with the factory Harley-Davidson team.

Smith, who earlier in the day won the "Dash for Cash," was the leader for 20 of the 25 laps. Jake Johnson led four and Coolbeth, who left Springfield as the series points leader, led one.

The AMA Professional Flat Track series heads to Knoxville, Iowa for the Knoxville Half Mile on June 15, 2014.
