[November 11, 2014]  DECATUR - Millikin Volleyball Headed to NCAA Tournament - The #23 Millikin volleyball team (30-9) is headed to the 2014 NCAA Tournament and will be playing this Friday at Washington University-St. Louis.

Millikin will face Thomas More (29-4) on Friday in St. Louis at 12:30 p.m.

Millikin lost 3-2 to #14 Carthage College in the CCIW Volleyball Tournament Championship match played on November 8 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Carthage won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-19 before the Big Blue rallied to win the third and fourth sets 25-21 and 26-24. Carthage took the fifth set 15-6.

Senior Jade Becker (Mt. Zion, H.S.) led Millikin with 13 kills and six blocks. Freshman Erin Syversen (Pewaukee, Wis., Waukesha West H.S.) had 12 kills and 18 digs. Audrey Krajec (West Salem, Edwards County H.S.) had eight kills and 10 digs for the Big Blue. Freshman Christina Capuani (Addison, Addison Trail H.S.) led Millikin in digs with 20. Fellow freshman Jenna Hilgers (Mason City, Illini Central H.S.) had a team high 30 set assists and 18 digs. Geena Mancuso (Naperville, Waubonsie Valley H.S.) added 16 digs. Alora Goodey (Lincoln, H.S.) had five kills and three blocks.
 

Millikin advanced to the CCIW Final match with a 3-2 over Wheaton College 3-2 on November 7. Millikin won 25-6, 19-25, 25-19, 19-25 and 20-18.

Krajec led Millikin with 23 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Becker had 13 kills and four blocks. Sara Travis (Schaumburg, H.S.) had nine kills and two blocks. Goodey had six kills and four blocks. Capuani had a team high 17 digs. Syversen had 14 digs and six kills. Mancuso had 11 digs. Alicia Thompson (Decatur, MacArthur H.S.) had 27 set assists and Hilgers had 26.

Millikin lost a conference match to 17 ranked Elmhurst College 3-1 on November 4 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois.

Millikin was led Krajec with 23 kills and 19 digs. Becker had 13 kills. Capuani had a team high 22 digs. Thompson led the Big Blue with 30 assists.

Big Blue Football Knocks Off Elmhurst

The Millikin University football team knocked off Elmhurst College 21-14 on November 8 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois.

After a scoreless first quarter, Millikin put up 14 points in the second quarter and took a 14-0 advantage into the locker room at the half.

Millikin’s first score came on a 32 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Pippin (Bourbonnais, Bradley Bourbonnais H.S.) to Brady Cufaude (Pekin, H.S.). Millikin then scored on its next possession when Pippin found tight end Kyle Leadlove (Belleville, Belleville West H.S.) in the back of the end zone on a four yard touchdown pass.

After an Elmhurst touchdown, Millikin answered right back on its next possession capping a four play 74 yard drive on a Pippin to Avante Meriweather (Maryland Heights, Mo., Parkway Central H.S.) 17 yard pass. The score was set up by a 41 yard Pippin to Cufaude pass.

Pippin was 11-20-1 for Millikin for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Cufaude was the Big Blue’s leading receiver with five catches for 91 yards. Millikin had an effective rushing attack led by Jacoby Sims (Hoffman Estates, Conant H.S.) with 73 yards on 16 carries and senior Justin Brooks (Bloomington, H.S.) gaining 54 yards on 10 carries.

Andy Roth (Naperville, Joliet Central Catholic H.S.) led the Millikin defense with 11 tackles.

Millikin is now 3-6, 1-5 while Elmhurst goes to 5-4, 4-2.

Millikin will conclude the 2014 season with a road game at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois on November 15 at 1 p.m.

Big Blue Swimmers Excel at IC Quad

The Millikin men's and women's swimming teams performed well at the Illinois College Quadangular on November 8 in Jacksonville, Illinois. The meet was scored as three separate dual meets with the Big Blue men and women each 3-0 on the day.

In the women's competition freshman Sami Battle (Odell, Pontiac H.S.) and Felicity Speirs (Lake Stevens, Washington, H.S.) each won two events. Battle won the 50 Yard Freestyle in 25.37 seconds and the 100 Free in 55.38 seconds. Speirs won the 500 Yard Freestyle in 5:45.42 and the 1650 Yard Freestyle in 19:41.06.

Junior Shelby Kobs (Byron, H.S.) was also a double event winner coming in first in the Women's 100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:14.37 and the 200 Yard Breaststroke in 2:43.36.

In men's action Jeremy Baehler (Wildwood, Mo., Desmet Jesuit H.S.) and Spencer McGowan (Morton, H.S.) were double event winners. Baehler won the 200 Yard Freestyle in 1:54.87 and the 1650 Yard Free in 18:27.05. McGowan won the 100 Yard Backstroke in 55.73 seconds and the 200 Yard Backstroke in 2:03.46.

Zak Ellrick (Milford, H.S.) won the men's 50 Yard Freestyle in 23.90 seconds.

The Millikin men’s and women’s swimming team spilt a double dual meet on November 7 at the McIntosh Pool in Decatur, Illinois. Millikin defeated Lincoln College 104-67 in the men’s competition and took the women’s competition 125-15. Franklin College defeated Millikin in both the men’s (151-50) and women’s (152-49) events.

 



Battle continued her assault on the Big Blue record book setting a new record in winning the 100 Yard Freestyle in 54.43. Battle also won the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:02.02.

McGowan won the Men’s 50 Yard Freestyle in 22.78 seconds and finished in first in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 56.03 seconds.

Millikin returns to action on November 22 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invite.
