Highlights of Thursday's NHL games

[November 14, 2014]  Nov 13 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Thursday's National Hockey League games:

Avalanche 4, Rangers 3

Center Nathan MacKinnon and left winger Alex Tanguay scored during a shootout to propel the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

MacKinnon tied the score at 3-3 midway through the third period on a power-play, his fifth goal the season, to help the send the game into overtime.

Tanguay and center Matt Duchene also scored for the Avalanche in regulation. Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves.

Right winger Kevin Hayes, center Derek Stepan and defenseman Dan Girardi scored for the Rangers, who received 25 saves from goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

Jets 3, Hurricanes 1

Right winger Blake Wheeler scored two goals as Winnipeg bounced back from a miserable outing last time out by defeating Carolina at PNC Arena.

Michel Frolik added an empty-net goal with 1:30 remaining as the Jets returned to winning ways following their 3-0 defeat against Montreal on Tuesday.

Center Elias Lindholm scored on a second-period power-play for Carolina, which had a six-game points streak snapped.

Sharks 2, Lightning 1

San Jose Sharks edged Tampa Bay thanks in large part to goaltender Antti Niemi's 32 saves at Amalie Arena.

Center Joe Thornton and winger Tyler Kennedy scored second-period goals that proved enough for San Jose.

Tampa Bay pulled goalie Ben Bishop, who made 37 saves in the game, in the final minute but could not get the tying goal after center Steven Stamkos scored in the third period to bring his team within striking distance.

Canadiens 5, Bruins 1

Left winger Max Pacioretty scored twice to lead Montreal to an easy win over Boston at the Bell Centre.

Goaltender Carey Price made 21 saves for Montreal, while Boston goalie Niklas Svedberg stopped 29 shots.

Right wingers Dale Weise and Jiri Sekac and center Lars Eller also scored for Montreal while defenseman Dougie Hamilton scored for Boston.

Wild 6, Sabres 3

Right winger Nino Niederreiter scored his first career hat-trick as Minnesota climbed out of an early hole to beat slumping Buffalo.

Centers Ryan Carter and Kyle Brodziak, and defenseman Jared Spurgeon also scored for Minnesota, which got 25 saves from goalie Niklas Backstrom.

Darcy Kuemper started the game in goal for Minnesota, but was pulled after allowing two goals on Buffalo's first two shots.

Blues 4, Predators 3

Center Paul Stastny's third-period goal broke a tie and earned St Louis victory over Nashville.

Right wingers T.J. Oshie and Vladimir Tarasenko and defenseman Carl Gunnarsson also scored for St Louis.

Center Filip Forsberg and defensemen Shea Weber and Roman Josi scored for Nashville.

Flames 5, Coyotes 3

Center Paul Byron scored twice to lead Calgary past Arizona.

Center Sean Monahan, right winger David Jones and defenseman Mark Giordano also scored for Calgary and goaltender Jonas Hiller stopped 20 shots to record the win.

Right winger Shane Doan and centers Antoine Vermette and Joe Vitale scored for Arizona while Mike Smith made 20 saves in the loss. (Editing by Simon Evans)
