10/01/2014 MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Crisp, Coco

CF Coco Crisp went 2-for-6 with an RBI in the AL wild-card game, but he had to leave with a tender right hamstring in the 11th inning. Manager Bob Melvin said, "If he has to come out of the game it's not good. For him to go out there and have to come back in means it's bad."

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Lester, Jon

LHP Jon Lester gave up six runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. He came in with a career postseason ERA of 2.11. He was not involved with the decision, but manager Bob Melvin praised his performance. "In Jon's case, he pitched well for us," Melvin said. "He left with the lead and gave us a chance to win. You don't expect the score to be (that high) with those two guys (Lester and James Shields) pitching, especially with the bullpens. That's why you play the game."

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Moss, Brandon

DH Brandon Moss hit two home runs and drove in five runs in the wild-card game. He blasted a 407-foot shot in the first to give Oakland a 2-0 lead. Then, with the A's trailing in the sixth, he launched a 418-foot home run to dead center field, giving the A's a 5-3 lead. He is the ninth player in A's history to hit multiple home runs in a postseason game.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Soto, Geovany

C Geovany Soto left the game in the bottom of the third inning with an injury to his left thumb that occurred in the bottom of the first. "He kind of pulled his thumb back on the play at the plate," manager Bob Melvin said. "It got worse and worse. As a catcher, you need your thumb, especially with (LHP Jon) Lester's cutter."

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Callaspo, Alberto

1B Alberto Callaspo recorded a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the 12th to give Oakland the lead. It was his first postseason RBI in nine career at-bats.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Perez, Salvador

C Salvador Perez delivered the third walk-off win in Kansas City's postseason history, and the first since Game 6 of the 1985 World Series. Perez failed to get the ball out of the infield in his first five at-bats, including two strikeouts. However, he pulled a slider from RHP Jason Hammel past third base for the game-winning hit. "I took a few pitches. I cut down (my swing) a little bit, and I got a base hit," he said.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Finnegan, Brandon

LHP Brandon Finnegan was pitching in college four months ago. The Royals' first-round pick in June made his major league debut in September and gave up one earned run in seven appearances. That put him in line to play a key role in the AL wild-card game. He pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up the go-ahead run in the 12th, but manager Ned Yost couldn't have been more pleased. "Phenomenal," he said. "He came in and banged strikes. He got 2 2/3 innings. I was hoping he'd get his first major league win in a game of this caliber."

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Herrera, Kelvin

RHP Kelvin Herrera threw 36 pitches in 1 2/3 innings of relief. It was the second-highest pitch total of the season for Herrera, behind a 47-pitch outing in Toronto May 30.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Hosmer, Eric

1B Eric Hosmer recorded his first postseason RBI in the third inning when he drove in Lorenzo Cain with an RBI single. He went 3-for-4 with two walks, including a one-out triple in the bottom of the 12th inning. He scored the tying run. His triple caromed off the top of the wall in left-center. "I definitely hit it good," Hosmer said of the triple. "Nighttime in this ballpark, if you hit a ball and you know it's gone, you've got some serious power."

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Hamilton, Josh

LF Josh Hamilton will be back in action when the Angels open the playoffs after missing the last two weeks of the season due to a sore ribcage. He took batting practice Tuesday. Manager Mike Scioscia said he would pencil Hamilton lower in the lineup than normal to take pressure off the veteran.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Shoemaker, Matt

RHP Matt Shoemaker, who sustained a mild oblique strain Sept. 15 and missed the rest of the regular season, threw a bullpen session Tuesday. He declared himself ready to go in the AL Division Series, and he is likely to start Game 2 or Game 3.

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Butler, Billy

DH Billy Butler went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Butler came into the game 4-of-28 against LHP Jon Lester, and he went 1-for-3 against the Oakland starter. He was the first batter after RHP Luke Gregerson replaced Lester, and he hit an RBI single in the eighth inning.

----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Dunn, Adam

DH Adam Dunn's wait to appear in a postseason game goes on -- assuming he returns for another season. He didn't get off the bench Tuesday as the A's lost to the Royals in the AL wild-card game. Dunn has played in 2,001 major league games, the most among active players without appearing in the playoffs.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics O'Flaherty, Eric

LHP Eric O'Flaherty, who enjoyed an impressive comeback season following Tommy John surgery, was left off the roster for the AL wild-card game. O'Flaherty sat out the last eight days of the regular season due to a sore left elbow. After he threw to hitters Monday, the decision was made to omit him from the roster for the elimination game against the Royals. "(He) didn't love the way the ball was coming out of his hand, so it just didn't seem prudent to put him on the playoff roster right now," manager Bob Melvin said, according to MLB.com.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Scherzer, Max

RHP Max Scherzer will be the Game 1 starter for Detroit in the American League Division Series against the Orioles, the Tigers announced Tuesday. Scherzer finished the regular season with an 18-5 record and a 3.15 ERA. He will face Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman (13-6, 3.34 ERA) in the opener Thursday in Baltimore.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Davis, Rajai

OF Rajai Davis might miss the first round of the playoffs. He sustained a groin injury Saturday that could keep him off the AL Division Series roster. Davis batted .282 this season in 134 games.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Gordon, Dee

2B Dee Gordon is a go for Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Friday against the Cardinals after sitting out the regular-season finale with a right hip injury. Gordon was cleared to play in the series opener in Los Angeles after making it through a workout with the team Tuesday. He left Saturday night's game against the Colorado Rockies in the first inning after grounding out to shortstop in his first at-bat. A similar injury forced him to miss a game earlier in the month.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - New York Yankees Beltran, Carlos

OF/DH Carlos Beltran had right elbow surgery Sept. 30 to remove a bone spur and loose pieces, the team announced. The Yankees said Beltran will be able to begin throwing and hitting in about six weeks. He is expected to be ready for spring training in February.

The 37-year-old had a disappointing first season with the Yankees after signing a three-year, $45 million contract in the offseason. He batted a career-low .233 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 449 plate appearances.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Buchholz, Clay

RHP Clay Buchholz underwent surgery Sept. 30 to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. GM Ben Cherrington said Buchholz dealt with the knee problem the entire season. Buchholz finished with an 8-11 record and a 5.34 ERA with two shutouts.
