MLB roundup: Rockies hire new GM

The Colorado Rockies hired Jeff Bridich to become the new general manager after longtime GM Dan O'Dowd resigned Wednesday.

Assistant general manager Bill Geivett also resigned after the Rockies' fourth consecutive losing season. The overhaul in the front office comes after a 66-96 season that represented the second-most losses in club history.

Bridich, 37, has spent the past 10 years as a member of the Rockies' operations department. He has served the past three years as the club's senior director of player development. Before joining the Rockies, Bridich worked in the Office of the Commissioner for Major League Baseball from 2001 to 2004.

O'Dowd, 55, spent 15 years as Rockies general manager, with four winning seasons and two postseason appearances.

---Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Brian Wilson has informed the team that he will exercise his $9.5 million player option for the 2015 season, according to reports Wednesday.

Wilson, 32, struggled in his second season with the Dodgers. He was 2-4 with a 4.66 ERA, 54 strikeouts and 29 walks in 48 1/3 innings. Wilson made just one appearance during the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. He gave up one hit and one walk while getting one out in the Dodgers' Game 3 loss.

The former San Francisco Giants right-handed closer joined the Dodgers in July 2013 and had a 0.66 ERA in 18 games with the team last season.

Oakland A's first baseman Brandon Moss is scheduled for hip surgery on Oct. 21, the team announced Wednesday.

Moss has known since last month that his injured hip would need surgery to repair torn cartilage.

After a hot start to the season, Moss cooled off. Before the All-Star break, he was batting .268 and led the Athletics with 21 home runs and 66 RBIs. His average dipped to .173 in 58 games after the break. Despite the injury, Moss hit two home runs in the A's American League wild-card game loss to the Kansas City Royals last week.
