The IHA Institute for Innovations in Care and Quality’s fourth
annual Quality Excellence Achievement Awards were presented during
the IHA’s Leadership Summit on Sept. 30 in Lombard.
Ninety-five healthcare quality improvement projects were submitted
by 43 hospitals and health systems. Entries were judged by a blinded
review panel of 26 independent quality experts from throughout the
United States.
Memorial Medical Center was recognized as the top project in the
urban hospital category for its project “Lean Six Sigma
Methodologies Reduce Red Blood Cell Transfusions by 32% in a
Tertiary Medical Center.”
By reducing red blood cell transfusions by nearly a third, the
nonprofit hospital was able to speed treatment delivery, decrease
adverse transfusion reaction risks and produce $2.8 million in
annual cost savings, said Charles Callahan, executive vice president
and chief operating officer of Memorial Health System.
In 2013, Memorial Health System, the parent organization for
Memorial Medical Center and six other affiliates, received the top
quality award in the healthcare system category for work directed at
reducing hospital-acquired pressure ulcers.

“This award from the Illinois Hospital Association recognizes
the outstanding work of many throughout the hospital to fulfill
our mission to improve the health of the people and communities
we serve,” Callahan said. “It further validates the evolution of
our quality and safety program, that we are working on the right
things and achieving nation-leading results.”
Awards went to the most highly scored project in each of four
categories: Healthcare System, Rural/Critical Access Hospital,
Urban Hospital and Palliative Care.
