Bere ends bid for State championship with two wins-two losses

[October 27, 2014]  LINCOLN - Lincoln Community High Schools, Kena Bere ended her tennis season this year at state finals with one win and two losses.

In the first game out, Bere placed againse Cammy Frei of Wenntka.  Frei, who is a top ranked player took both matches with scores of 2-6 and 0-6.

Bere was then in line to play in the consolation braket.  There she defeated Anna Lytchakov of Chatham-Glenwood in three matches.  Final scores were 5-7, 6-2, and 6-0.

Next in line was an opponent from Roselle, Gina Odisho.  Bere took that match and moved on to the finals in consolation.

Her final opponent was Haley Wilcox of Tinley Park.  Bere took the first set with a score of 6-3.  In the second set, she was off to a hardy lead at 5-2 When Wilcox found her game and brought the set to a tie, then went on to defeat Bere.

Coach Njeri Bere stated, "This has been a great learning experience and we are very grateful to Lincoln Community High School that paid for us to come to State and remain in Chicago until Saturday so that we can watch all the matches taking place.

"We are very thankful to all family and friends who have supported us along the way. Special thanks to teammate Melissa Van who came with us to Chicago and has given great support (and comic relief) to Kena at every match.

"With God's help we hope to continue playing so that we improve and return to State next year."
