[October 30, 2014]  LINCOLN - On October 29, 2014, the Honorable William Workman sentenced Brook Maaks to ten (10) years in prison for Drug Induced Homicide. The sentence also carries a term of 3 years of mandatory supervised release, formerly known as parole.

On February 11, 2013, a Logan County Grand Jury returned a Bill of Indictment alleging that Ms. Maaks delivered heroin, a controlled substance, to Courtney Reves and Courtney Reves thereafter injected a portion of that heroin into her body contributing to her death. Ms. Maaks was taken into custody on February 11th on a bond of $100,000.00 and has been in pretrial detention since that time. On September 3, 2014, Brook Maaks entered a plea of guilty to Drug Induced Homicide, a class X felony, and the case was set for sentencing hearing for today. The law requires that a person convicted of Drug Induced Homicide serve at least 75% of the prison sentence before becoming eligible for mandatory supervised release.

We extend our sympathies to the family of Courtney Reves. We hope that this tragic case can educate the community about the dangers of heroin use. We also hope that this sentence will deter others not only from using heroin but also from delivering it - under any circumstances. Brook Maaks is not a hardened drug dealer. She knew Courtney Reves quite well. But the law is clear that delivering an illegal drug to another - regardless of whether money was exchanged - is a serious crime when that drug contributes to their cause of death.
