Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia missed his fourth straight game because of concussion-like symptoms, but manager John Farrell believes he could return Friday when the team comes home.

Farrell said Pedroia passed the concussion impact test and that he also took early batting practice.

--The Pittsburgh Pirates designated outfielder Michael Martinez for assignment.

Martinez managed only five hits in 39 at-bats in 28 games for the Pirates, driving in two runs.

---Atlanta Braves left fielder Justin Upton wasn't in the lineup Wednesday after sustaining a bruised triceps muscle when hit on the left arm by a pitch from right-hander Kyle Kendrick the night before.

Upton is listed as day-to-day.

---Oakland A's closer Sean Doolittle (strained right intercostal muscle) played long toss Wednesday as he continued to make solid progress in his recovery.

"Felt great," A's manager Bob Melvin said of the left-hander, who has 20 saves this season. "Tomorrow he'll be off, and we'll see where we are with him on Friday. But encouraging to see that he feels as good as he does."

Doolittle is eligible to be activated from the disabled list on Monday.

---Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said he will decide Thursday whether to skip struggling right-hander Chris Young's start in the rotation Saturday.

McClendon watched Young throw a bullpen session before Wednesday's game. He said his decision will be based on whether he's convinced that Young is healthy.

"That's the only factor that really comes into play," McClendon said. "His bullpen was good, threw the ball good."

---Washington Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche didn't play for the second straight game because of lower back tightness.

LaRoche, listed as day to day, aggravated his back in Monday's win.

---With St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha returning to the rotation Thursday night in Milwaukee, it means that trade deadline acquisition Justin Masterson is being demoted to the bullpen.

The right-handed Masterson is 2-3 with a 7.90 ERA in six starts, only one of which was a quality start.
