[September 08, 2014]  (Reuters) - Four children died and two adults were critically injured when fire swept through a Chicago apartment building early Monday, police said.

The fire started about 3:25 a.m., leaving the four children dead, the two adults hospitalized and displacing 50 other people, according to Chicago police spokeswoman Janel Sedevic.

Sedevic said she could not confirm the ages of the children.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the victims were two girls and two boys between the ages of 6 and 16. The injured adults had fled the fire by jumping from the apartment building, located in the Roseland neighborhood on the city's south side, the newspaper reported.
