Cardinals 9, Brewers 1

St. Louis opened up a five-game lead over Milwaukee atop the National League Central, riding a complete game from right-hander Adam Wainwright to a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Wainwright (17-9) had trouble with the Brewers in two previous starts this season (1-1, 6.57 ERA) but carried a shutout into the ninth this time wihle scattering seven hits with three strikeouts.

The Cardinals' offense made its contribution in the fourth, tagging Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson for four runs on a walk and four hits including a two-run triple by center fielder Peter Bourjos, who went 2-for-4 in the game and had five hits in the four-game set with Milwaukee.

Orioles 7, Rays 5 (11 innings)

Nelson Cruz knocked in all seven of his team's runs, giving the Orioles the lead with three in the ninth on a triple and two in the 11th with a home run as the American League East leaders came back for a 7-5 win.
 


Cruz finished 4-for-5 with seven RBIs, two homers and a triple. His 39th homer of the season off reliever Cesar Ramos came on the first pitch in the 11th, just as his three-run triple in the ninth off Joel Peralta had. Cruz improved his team-leading RBI total to 101.

In salvaging the final game of the three-game set, Baltimore (83-59) now leads New York by 9 1/2 games as Kansas City took two of three concurrently in Yankee Stadium. Tampa Bay fell to 69-75 and lost much of the momentum gained in thoroughly containing the division-leaders over the weekend.

Angels 14, Twins 4

The Los Angeles Angels scored nine runs in the middle innings, turning a close game into a blowout as they closed out a four-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins.

Shortstop Erick Aybar's sacrifice fly with one out in the fifth inning opened the floodgates and gave the Angels the lead. Second baseman Howie Kendrick followed with a two-run triple later in the inning before the Angels (87-55) broke the game open with a six-run sixth.

First baseman C.J. Cron belted a two-run homer and Aybar scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-3. Designated hitter Albert Pujols added an RBI double and catcher Chris Iannetta singled in two more to make it 12-3 through six.

Tigers 6, Giants 1

Miguel Cabrera hit his third home run in two games and drove in three runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a win over the San Francisco Giants.

Cabrera hit a two-run home run, his 22nd, in the third inning and added an RBI single in the seventh. The Tigers first baseman reached the 100-RBI mark for the 11th consecutive season.

The Giants (78-65) fell three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West Division.

Royals 2, Yankees 0

Rookie Yordano Ventura and three relievers combined on a three-hitter and the Kansas City Royals spoiled a day honoring Derek Jeter with a victory over the New York Yankees.

The first pitch was delayed 25 minutes as the Yankees honored Jeter's 20-year career that will end after this season. Once the ceremonies ended, Ventura allowed three singles and eight base runners through six-plus innings.

The Royals (79-62) won for the fifth time in six games and moved 2 1/2 games ahead of the Detroit Tigers, who were playing later Sunday, in the AL Central.

Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 2

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez homered twice and drove in a career-tying six RBIs, rallying the Los Angeles Dodgers to a romp and completing a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gonzalez hit a pair of three-run homers as the Dodgers (81-62) hammered the Diamondbacks (59-84) for the fifth straight time and the 15th game in 19 contests this season.

Zack Greinke (14-8) struggled at times, but improved to 5-0 in seven career starts against Arizona as a Dodger. Greinke allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

Nationals 3, Phillies 2

Adam LaRoche hit a pair of solo home runs and Gio Gonzalez pitched six solid innings as the Washington Nationals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies salvaging the finale of the three-game series.

Shortstop Ian Desmond added a pair of doubles and scored the go-ahead run for the NL-East leading Nationals (80-61), who had lost three of their last four.

LaRoche, the first baseman who has been suffering from several ailments of late, has four homers and 10 RBIs in his last four games.

Astros 4, A's 3

The Houston Astros capitalized on five walks to score two runs in the top of the ninth inning and rallied past the Oakland A's.

The A's took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on first baseman Nate Freiman's two-run homer, but right-hander Ryan Cook walked three batters in the ninth and left-hander Fernando Abad two.

The A's (80-62) fell seven games behind the first-place Los Angeles Angels in the American League West and lost for the eighth time in their past 10 games.

Rangers 1, Mariners 0

Derek Holland and three relievers shut out the Seattle Mariners as the Texas Rangers snapped an eight-game losing streak.

The lefty Holland, out most of the season recovering from knee surgery, earned his first victory in his second start of 2014 by giving up six hits and striking out five over seven innings. He walked none.

Right-hander Shawn Tolleson pitched a scoreless eighth and right-hander Neftali Feliz worked around a one-out jam to earn his eighth save and drop Seattle to 78-64.

Mets 4, Reds 3

Anthony Recker and Curtis Granderson homered to back a strong start by Zach Wheeler, lifting the New York Mets to a victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

New York (68-75) took two of three in the series to improve to 23-15 all-time at Great American Ball Park.

Pirates 10, Cubs 4

The Pittsburgh Pirates used the long ball to quickly take command and cruised from there to a victory and a series sweep of the Chicago Cubs.

The Pirates (74-68) chased Cubs starter Travis Wood after just 1 2/3 innings after second baseman Neil Walker, shortstop Jordy Mercer and center fielder Andrew McCutchen each clubbed home runs over the first two innings.

The victory was Pittsburgh's (74-68) third straight and completed its first series sweep since taking a pair of interleague games in Detroit on Aug. 11-12.

Rockies 6, Padres 0

Jackson Williams hit his first career home in just his fourth start, a three-run shot that helped the Rockies beat the San Diego Padres to earn a sweep of their three-game series.

The shutout was the second in three games against the Padres and the win enabled the Rockies to finish a 5-1 homestand.

Franklin Morales worked six innings for the Rockies, who broke the game open when third baseman Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer in the seventh and right fielder Charlie Blackmon tripled home a run in the eighth.

Indians 2, White Sox 0

The Cleveland Indians' run of brilliant pitching continued as right-hander Carlos Carrasco pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings to lead the Indians to a victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Carrasco (7-4) gave up four hits, with eight strikeouts and no walks. He was relieved by right-hander Cody Allen with two on and two outs in the ninth inning. Allen got the third out to record his 19th save.

The Indians swept the three-game series, despite scoring just seven runs in the three games.

Marlins 4, Braves 0

Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in two runs, Brad Hand pitched six scoreless innings and the Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves.

Second baseman Donovan Solano and center fielder Marcell Ozuna also drove in a run for the Marlins, who took two of three from the Braves in the series.

Atlanta, tied with Milwaukee for the second wild-card spot, has dropped four of its last five.

Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 1

The Toronto Blue Jays avoided a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox with a win, thanks to right fielder Jose Bautista's 31st home run and a strong outing from knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

Dickey earned the win, improving to 12-12 (3.84 ERA). He went seven innings, giving up one run on six hits with no walks, four strikeouts, and a hit batter.
