White Sox 5, Athletics 4 (12 innings)

Tyler Flowers blasted a game-tying home run in the ninth inning then added the walk-off in the 12th to deliver the Chicago White Sox a victory over Oakland.

Flowers finished with three hits and helped the White Sox earn a big comeback win.

Josh Reddick and Jed Lowrie homered for Oakland (80-63) who has lost five of their last six games to fall eight games behind the first-place Los Angeles Angels.

Sonny Gray tossed seven innings for the Athletics and allowed three runs in a no-decision.

Angels 12, Indians 3

The Los Angeles Angels hit four home runs and Jered Weaver pitched six solid innings as the streaking Angels routed the Cleveland Indians.

Designated hitter Albert Pujols hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning, his 26th of the season and 518th of his career.



Kole Calhoun, third baseman David Freese and second baseman Howie Kendrick also hit home runs for the Angels, who roughed up six Cleveland pitchers for 16 hits.

Weaver (16-8) gave up three runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and two walks in six innings for the first-place Angels (88-55).

Tigers 9, Royals 5

Justin Verlander checked the Kansas City Royals on six hits over seven innings and the Detroit Tigers exploded for six runs in the third inning to take a victory and pull to within a game of the first-place Royals in the American League Central.

The right-handed Verlander (13-12) walked one and struck out four to open the first of two three-game series between the two top teams in the division. Detroit visits Kansas City beginning Sept. 19.

Torii Hunter and Victor Martinez had three hits each for the Tigers (79-65) who cut Kansas City's (79-63) lead to just one game in the American League Central.

Nationals 2, Braves 1

Doug Fister pitched seven scoreless innings to outduel Mike Minor as the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves in the opener of a three-game series.

The first-place Nationals (81-61) increased their National League East lead to eight games over the second-place Braves (74-70).

Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman (2-for-3) hit a two-out, RBI single in the eighth against reliever Matt Thornton to pull the Braves to within 2-1. However, Craig Stammen got left fielder Justin Upton to pop out on a foul ball to first baseman Adam LaRoche to end the inning.

Blue Jays 8, Cubs 0

Marcus Stroman pitched a three-hitter for his first career shutout, and Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Chicago Cubs.

Stroman (10-5) allowed three singles and no walks while striking out eight in the opener of a three-game series.

Bautista's homer in the fifth inning was his 32nd of the season and the 200th of his career as a Blue Jay (74-69), the fifth Toronto player to reach that plateau.

Cardinals 5, Reds 0

Shelby Miller pitched seven scoreless innings and Matt Carpenter broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the seventh, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a win over the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a four-game series.

First baseman Matt Adams sealed the victory with a three-run home run in the ninth off Logan Ondrusek.

The Cardinals (80-64) maintained their 4 1/2-game lead in the National League Central over the second-place Pittsburgh Pirates.

Mets 3, Rockies 2

Wilmer Flores hit a sacrifice fly to cap the Mets' stunning six-pitch, two-run, ninth-inning rally and New York edged the Colorado Rockies.

Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud began the ninth inning by hitting the third pitch he saw from Rockies right-hander LaTroy Hawkins (3-3) to deep left field for a double. Right fielder Curtis Granderson tripled to right on the next pitch to score pinch runner Eric Young Jr.

Right-hander Carlos Torres (7-5) threw a perfect ninth inning for the Mets (69-75), who won for the fifth time in seven games.

Pirates 6, Phillies 4

Jeff Locke pitched seven strong innings to win for the fifth time in six decisions as the Pittsburgh Pirates hung on to beat the Philadelphia Phillies.

Starling Marte, who extended his hitting streak to eight games, went 3-for-5 with a homer for the Pirates. Pittsburgh won its fourth consecutive game to maintain its hold on the National League's second wild card.

Center fielder Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-4 for the Pirates (75-68), his third straight three-hit game.

Orioles 4, Red Sox 0

Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings to continue his hot streak and lead Baltimore to victory.

Having pitched his first career shutout in his previous start, he has yielded one earned run in 22 1/3 innings over his last three starts, four runs in 34 2/3 over his last five.



The win moved the Orioles (84-59) 10 games ahead of the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East -- Baltimore's first double-digit lead of not only this season but its first September 10-game lead since 1979.

Marlins 6, Brewers 4

Home runs from Marcell Ozuna, Garrett Jones and Giancarlo Stanton were enough to support right-hander Brad Penny, who went six innings in the Marlins' victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Penny (2-1) won for the first time since his 2014 debut on Aug. 9. He gave up two runs on four hits and three walks but allowed just one runner past first base after the first inning. He finished with one strikeout.

Milwaukee (74-70) sit six games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central and trail the Pittsburgh Pirates by one and a half games for the second National League wild card.

Dodgers 9, Padres 4

Carl Crawford and Juan Uribe homered, and the Los Angeles Dodgers coasted to a victory over the San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers (82-62) captured their fourth consecutive win and increased their lead to 3 1/2 games in the National League West over the idle San Francisco Giants. The Padres (66-77) lost their sixth in a row.

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw became baseball's first 18-game winner, striking out eight and giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits in eight innings. He threw 89 pitches, 64 of them strikes. Kershaw (18-3) retired the first nine batters he faced while improving to 15-1 since June 2.

Mariners 4, Astros 1

Felix Hernandez tossed six strong innings, Brad Miller added three RBIs and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Houston Astros.

Hernandez allowed five hits and struck out eight but took a no-decision.
