[September 17, 2014]  DECATUR - Millikin Volleyball 3-1 at DePauw Tournament - The 25th ranked Millikin volleyball team went 3-1 at the DePauw Tiger Invitational on September 12-13 in Greencastle, Indiana. Millikin is now 10-2 on the season.

Millikin won both its matches on Friday downing Hanover 3-1 and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 3-0. Millikin downed Defiance 3-0 on Saturday before losing to #22 DePauw 3-0.

Millikin defeated Hanover 25-10, 25-19, 27-29 and 25-18. Audrey Krajec (West Salem, Edwards County H.S.) led the way for Millikin with 26 kills and 10 digs. Christina Capuani (Addison, Addison Trail H.S.) had a team high 21 digs and three service aces. Erin Syversen (Pewaukee, Wis., Waukesha West H.S.) had 17 digs and nine kills. Jade Becker (Mt. Zion, H.S.) had nine kills and three blocks. Jenna Hilgers (Mason City, Illini Central H.S.) had 45 set assists and 10 digs.

Millikin downed Rose-Hulman 25-13, 25-19 and 25-17. Krajec led Millikin with 11 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and two aces. Sara Travis (Schaumburg, H.S.) had nine kills and Becker had eight kills and three blocks. Hilgers had 34 assists. Syversen had a team high 11 digs and two aces.

Millikin defeated Defiance College 25-11, 25-8 and 25-19. Millikin was very effective in its offensive attack scoring 60 match points before committing its first attack error. Millikin had a team hitting percentage of .440 for the match. Krajec 20 kills with a .529 attack percentage along with 10 digs. Becker had nine kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Capuani had 10 digs and Syversen had nine digs along with four service aces. Hilgers had 35 set assists.

Millikin lost to DePauw 25-20, 30-28 and 25-23. Krajec had 18 kills and 12 digs and three blocks to pace the Millikin attack. Becker had 11 digs and three blocks. Syversen had a team high 18 digs followed by Geena Mancuso (Naperville, Waubonsie Valley H.S.) with 16. Higlers had 36 set assists and nine digs.

Krajec and Becker were named to the Tiger Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Millikin will travel to the Elmhurst College on September 19-20.



Millikin Football Suffers Road Loss

The Millikin football team lost 28-14 at Trine University on September 13 in Angola, Indiana. Each team now stands at 1-1 on the season. The game was part of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) vs. Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Challenge.

Millikin’s first touchdown came on a 24 yard pass from quarterback Nick Pippin (Bourbonnais, Bradley Bourbonnais H.S.) to Taylor Sanders (Marshall, H.S.).

Millikin would score early in the fourth quarter when Pippin hit tight end Tucker Schwengel (Shelbyville, H.S.) on a 10 yard touchdown pass to cut the advantage to 21-14.

Pippin was 21-39 passing for 239 yards and two touchdowns for Millikin. Sanders was Millikin's top receiver with seven catches for 106 yards and two scores. Justin Brooks (Bloomington, H.S.) led the Millikin rushers with 75 yards on 13 carries.

Freshman Nikia Averitte (Indianapolis, Indiana, Lawrence Central H.S.) led the Millikin tacklers with 12 tackles. Andy Roth (Naperville, Joliet Catholic H.S.) had 11.

Millikin has next weekend off before hosting Aurora University on September 27 at 6 p.m.

Big Blue Men’s Soccer Earns Road Victory

The Millikin men's soccer team defeated Webster University 2-0 on September 10 in Fenton, Missouri.

Millikin freshman Ben Spelman (Sligo, Ireland) opened the scoring with a first period goal. The Big Blue made it 2-0 in the 54th minute on a goal by Nick Abel (Schaumburg, H.S.). Daniel Sinclair (Peoria, Richwoods H.S.) earned the win in goal for the Big Blue recording four saves.

The Big Blue men's soccer team lost at Westminster College 1-0 in double overtime on September, 13 in Fulton, Missouri.

Sinclair had six saves in goal for the Big Blue.

Millikin is now 2-2-1 and will travel to Monmouth College on September 17.

Millikin Men's Golf Takes Second

The Millikin men's golf team finished in second place at the Triangular at the Rail played at the Rail Golf Course in Springfield, Illinois on September 14.

Millikin shot a team total of 298 and placed in second eight shots behind Illinois Wesleyan's 290. The Millikin B team was fourth with a 307. Illinois College finished in fifth with a 329.

Millikin's top performer was Alex Koulos (Naperville, Waubonsie Valley H.S.) who fired a three under 69 to finish tied for second. Millikin sophomore Blaine Buente (Troy, Triad H.S.) was eighth with a 74 and Mike Bubenicek (Downers Grove, Downers Grove South H.S.) was tied for ninth with a 76.

Millikin will play in the NCAA Championship Preview September 20-22 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
