[September 22, 2014]
Beginning in September, the
Atlanta Public Library will feature a monthly GET HOOKED ON! exhibit
dedicated to a writer popular with Library patrons. A good way for
the Library’s readers to share their reading preferences and
recommendations, GET HOOKED ON! is a good place to start when
looking for something “new” to read.
September focuses on Philippa Gregory, a favorite of Annie
Hieronymus who shares her thoughts about the writer of historical
fiction as part of the exhibit. Come in and browse Gregory’s books
throughout the month.
Philippa Gregory was born in Nairobi, Kenya. She has written a
popular series of romantic novels (the Wideacre Series), as well as
several children’s books and books with a gardening theme, among
others. At the heart of her work, however, are her books based on
English history. One of her most popular books, The Other Boleyn
Girl, was made into a movie starring Natalie Portman and Scarlet
Johansson, and it led to subsequent works, including The Queen's
Fool, The Virgin's Lover, The Constant Princess, The Boleyn
Inheritance, and The Other Queen. Gregory’s series on the Cousins
War and the years leading up to the Tudor reign became the popular
television mini-series “The White Queen.”

Gregory is also an educational activist. Nearly 20
years ago, she founded Gardens for The Gambia, a charity that raises
funds to develop wells in Gambia. So far the charity has paid for
140 wells for the primary school students of this African country.
A former student of Sussex University and a Ph.D. and Alumna of the
Year 2009 of Edinburgh University, Gregory now lives with her family
on a small farm in Yorkshire, England. You can read more about
Philippa Gregory on her website www.Philippa.Gregory.com.
