[September 29, 2014]  Sept 28 (The Sports Xchange) - The Miami Marlins agreed to a contract extension with manager Mike Redmond that will run through the 2017 season, multiple media outlets reported.

The Marlins confirmed via Twitter that Redmond and his entire staff will return for the 2015 season.

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun played in Sunday's regular-season finale, but he is scheduled to undergo thumb surgery on Thursday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Braun hopes the procedure will correct a nerve problem in his right thumb that given him pain since early in the 2013 season.

Brewers right-hander Brandon Kintzler will undergo surgery Tuesday on his left patella tendon. He said the issue has been bothering him for nearly two years.

Cleveland Indians designated hitter Jason Giambi said he has not decided yet whether he will retire, or attempt to play one more year. Giambi, 43, spent most of the season on the disabled list.

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Russell Martin missed his second straight start with a left hamstring strain.

Detroit Tigers center fielder Rajai Davis hopes he can play by Thursday after suffering a Grade 1 pubic symphysis strain Saturday night.

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Chris Tillman will pitch Thursday's opener of the Division Series, but Showalter has not announced the rest of his rotation.

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed right-handed pitcher Cory Burns off waivers from Tampa Bay and selected the contract of 1B Matt Hague from Triple-A Buffalo.

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker told The Los Angeles Times that he's "very optimistic" that he'll be able to pitch in the postseason despite suffering a strained rib cage in a Sept. 15 win over Seattle.

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced that first baseman/outfielder Travis Ishikawa, who made his third career start in left field Sunday, would be the team's starter in left field Wednesday in the wild-card game.
