NHL roundup: Senators' dramatic comeback gives them chance

 OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators dramatically rallied from a three goal first period deficit to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime at Canadian Tire Centre on Tuesday night.

Winger Mark Stone's second of the night with 2:17 left in the extra session gave the Senators playoff hopes life, while preventing the Penguins from clinching a postseason berth.

Ottawa is now tied with the Boston Bruins for the final wild-card spot, but the Bruins have a game in hand and win the tie-breaker between the two teams.

The Senators are also one point back of the Penguins, and two behind the Detroit Red Wings.

Winger Mike Hoffman and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for the Senators.

Center Sidney Crosby, winger Beau Bennett and winger Patric Hornqvist scored for the Penguins.

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury made 40 saves while Senators goalie Andrew Hammond stopped 25 shots.

Jets 1, Blues 0

ST. LOUIS -- Ondrej Pavelec recorded his second shutout in as many nights to give Winnipeg a victory over St. Louis.

The win strengthened Winnipeg's palce as the second wild-card team with 96 points while the loss snapped a three game winning streak for the Blues and kept their point total at 105.

Right wing Chris Thorburn scored the only goal of the game 2:31 into the second period. After goalie Jake Allen stopped a shot from the point by center Jim Slater, Thorburn was able to gather in the rebound and get a backhander past Allen.

Wild 2, Blackhawks 1

CHICAGO -- Minnesota clinched its third consecutive playoff berth with a win at Chicago.

Center Mikael Granlund and left winger Jason Zucker scored for Minnesota, which earned its 11th consecutive road win to increase its franchise record streak. Goaltender Devan Dubnyk stopped 32 of 33 shots for the Wild (45-27-8).

Left winger Bryan Bickell scored the Blackhawks' lone goal. Chicago (48-26-6) dropped its second consecutive game on home ice.Goaltender Corey Crawford turned aside 28 of 30 shots in the loss.

Red Wings 3, Hurricanes 2

DETROIT -- Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist each and Detroit rallied from a third-period deficit for a win against Carolina at Joe Louis Arena.

Right winger Gustav Nyquist also scored for Detroit while goaltender Jimmy Howard made 30 saves.

Left winger Chris Terry had a goal and an assist and left winger Nathan Gerbe scored for Carolina. Center Victor Rask had two assists and goalie Anton Khudobin stopped 22 shots.

Flyers 5, Islanders 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Center Brayden Schenn scored a stunning goal with two seconds left in regulation to lift Philadelphia to a win over the New York Islanders.

Center Claude Giroux scored two goals and left winger Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo also scored for the Flyers. Philadelphia netminder Steve Mason made 36 saves.

Center Anders Lee scored twice and center John Tavares and defenseman Johnny Boychuk one each for the Islanders. Goaltender Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves in the loss.

Rangers 4, Devils 2

NEWARK, N.J. -- The New York Rangers clinched the Presidents' Trophy that goes to the team with the most points in the regular season, and they assured themselves of home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs by defeating New Jersey at the Prudential Center.

New York (52-21-7) also tied the franchise record for regular-season wins set in 1993-94, when the organization won its fourth Stanley Cup.

The Rangers got goals from right winger Kevin Hayes and defenseman Ryan McDonagh, center James Sheppard and left winger Carl Hagelin, the latter into an empty net. Forwards Patrik Elias and Steve Bernier scored for the Devils.

Oilers 4, Kings 2

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Los Angeles' playoff hopes suffered a major blow when it dropped a game at 28th-place Edmonton.

Left winger Matt Fraser scored twice, including an empty-netter to seal it, and right winger Tyler Pitlick and left winger Benoit Pouliot also scored for Edmonton.

Defensemen Jake Muzzin and Drew Doughty scored for the Kings.

Flames 3, Coyotes 2

CALGARY, Alberta -- Sean Monahan ripped home his 31st goal of the season to break a third-period deadlock and give Calgary a win over Arizona.

The win keeps the Flames (44-29-7) ahead of the Los Angeles Kings in the Pacific Division playoff race and means Calgary can clinch its first playoff berth since 2009 with a regulation victory over Los Angeles on Thursday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

NHL rookie scoring leader Johnny Gaudreau and David Jones also scored for the Flames, while the Coyotes (24-48-8) got goals from Craig Cunningham and B.J. Crombeen in the loss.



Avalanche 3, Predators 2

DENVER -- Right winger Jarome Iginla and center Ryan O'Reilly scored nine seconds apart, center Joey Hishon got his first NHL goal and Colorado beat Nashville.

Defenseman Ryan Ellis and center Calle Jarnkrok had goals and goalie Pekka Rinne had 20 saves for the Predators, who lost their fourth straight.

Nashville missed a chance to move ahead of St. Louis in the battle for the Central Division title. The Blues lost to Winnipeg at home Tuesday night and maintain a one-point lead on Nashville with two games remaining. Nashville (47-23-10) currently holds the tiebreaker on St. Louis.
